#3/4 St. Cloud State Skates to a 5-5 Tie Against WMU

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #3/4 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (12-3-4, 7-2-2-0 NCHC) skated to a 5-5 tie against Western Michigan University (11-8-4, 5-5-1-1 NCHC) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. on Friday, Jan. 17.
In a roller-coaster contest, the Huskies jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the contest before WMU staged a comeback in the second period to tie the game at 4-4. Â Both teams exchanged goals in the final period before the Broncos gained the extra point in the NCHC standings with a 1-0 decision in the shootout after a scoreless OT session.
SCSU's Jimmy Murray kicked the game off with an unassisted goal at 1:47 of the first period. Â Murray stole the puck from WMU in the neutral zone and then charged in to hit the open top corner against Bronco netminder Frank Slubowski. Â Justin Kovacs of WMU tied the score at 1-1 at 8:55 of the first with a power play marker with assists from Colton Hargrove and Kenney Morrison.
The Huskies then rolled off three unanswered goals as Murray started the parade with an even-strength goal at 13:57 of the first period with assists from Nic Dowd and Joey Holka. Â Two goals on the night moved Murray's season total to five in 2013-14.
Kalle Kossila notched his sixth goal of the season with a power play goal at 14:34 of the first period as Ethan Prow and Jonny Brodzinski had assists on the play. Â This was Kossila's sixth goal of the year and it was also Brodzinski's team-leading 20th point of the season.
The scoring run was completed by SCSU's Cory Thorson at 5:33 of the second period with a power play goal. Â Thorson's sixth goal of the season was assisted by David Morley and Andrew Prochno.
WMU then took control of the offense in the remainder of the second period. Â The Broncos scored their second PPG of the evening at 7:26 of the second period with a marker by Mike Cichy on assists from Josh Pitt and Morrison. Â WMU's Shane Berschbach continue the run with a goal at 10:06 of the second to make it 4-3 and then Chase Balisy tied the game up at 4-4 with a goal at 13:01 of the second period.
In the third period, Dowd scored the Huskies' third power play goal of the night at 7:37 with helpers from Morley and Kevin Gravel. Â Morley now has a team leading 14 assists in 2013-14, while the goal was Dowd's 11th of the season. Â He is now tied for th team's goal lead along with Brodzinski at 11 apiece.
The two points on the evening pushed Dowd's career total to 100-points, which makes him the 25th player in the history of St. Cloud State's NCAA Division I hockey program to join the 100-point club. Â Dowd now has 41 goals and 59 assists as a Husky.
WMU knotted the game up again at 5-5 with a goal by Balisy at 16:38 of the third period with assists from Kovacs and Berschbach.
In the shootout session, neither team was able to score as WMU outshot the Huskies by a 3-1 margin in the extra period. Â Western Michigan won the post-game shootout by a 1-0 margin as Kovacs netted the only goal in the first attempt against SCSU goalie Ryan Faragher.
On the night, WMU outshot the Huskies 27-22 with Faragher making 22 saves in the game for SCSU. Â Slubowski made 1 save and allowed three goals for WMU and played the first 14:34 minutes of the game. Â Lukas Hafner finished the contest for WMU with 16 saves and two goals allowed. Â He was the goalie of record for the Broncos in the contest.
SCSU was 3-of-5 on the power play in the game and WMU finished the evening at 2-of-4 on the advantage.
St. Cloud State and Western Michigan will complete the weekend series at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center with a 7:07 p.m. game. Â Great tickets are still available and they are available for this game at the special price of $15. Â The game will also feature $1 hot dogs at the Sodexo concession stands during the game. Â
Fans are encouraged to bring their skates with them as the annual Skate with the Huskies program will take place immediately following the game on Feb. 18. Â This event will allow fans to hit the ice at the Brooks Center along with the members of the SCSU men's hockey team after the game.
