Women's Hockey Falls to #4 North Dakota, 3-1

Grand Forks, N.D. – St. Cloud State women's hockey ended their series against #4 North Dakota Saturday, Jan. 18 from the Ralph Engelstad Arena as they fell by a final score of 3-1.
The Huskies and UND's defenses were strong with both teams getting many looks on goal but took a scoreless game into the first intermission to start the game. North Dakota led St. Cloud in shots by a margin of eight-to-four in the period.
St. Cloud came out in the second period with some momentum as the game stood scoreless. At the 11:41 mark of the period the Huskies would put up the first goal of the game as sophomore Hanna Brodt found the back of the net taking a 1-0 lead. Brodt shot from the slot putting it over the shoulder of the UND goalie to record her first of the season. Sydney Burghardt was credited with the assist.
Later in the second period at the 17:14 mark, UND tied the game up 1-1 on a goal by Michelle Karvinen just in front of the net. A 1-1 tie would stand through the second intermission with UND leading shots 21-12.
North Dakota gained the lead over the Huskies just 1:25 into the third period as UND's Karvinen snagged a loose puck in the SCSU crease making it a 2-1 game. With only :40 seconds left in the period, St. Cloud put an extra skater on the ice taking Julie Friend out from the net. The Huskies would get a couple shots on goal but UND was able to shoot an empty-netter sealing a 3-1 victory at the 19:45 mark.
Playing a solid game between the pipes for St. Cloud, Friend recorded 32 saves and goalie of record, while UND's Shelby Amsley-Benzie tallied 20 for the win. Friend moves her record to 3-12-2 on the season with the loss.
Ending the game UND led shots on goal by a final margin of 35-21. Neither team was able to capitalize on their power-play opportunities as St. Cloud was zero-for-six and North Dakota zero-for-two.
St. Cloud State (4-19-3, 3-15-2-1 WCHA) will be back in action Jan. 24-25 as they end their six-game road stand at #1 Minnesota. Game times are set for 7:07 p.m. start times both days from Ritter Arena.
