Huskies Fall at #1 Minnesota Friday, 3-0
1/24/2014 8:43:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Minneapolis, Minn. -Â The St. Cloud State women's hockey team kicked off their final series of a six-game road stand Friday as they traveled to #1 Minnesota. A late goal in the first proved too much for the Huskies as they fell to the Gophers, 3-0.Â
The last time the two teams met the Huskies gave Minnesota, undefeated at the time, everything they could handle. With both teams coming out to play Friday, it was a scoreless first period at Ridder Arena until the 14:51 mark when Minnesota took a 1-0 lead. The Gophers' Meghan Lorence scored the goal off assists from Hannah Brandt and Rachel Ramsey.
After the first period Minnesota was leading St. Cloud in shots on goal by a margin of 18-to-3.
Minnesota came out in the second taking control of the game, as they extended their lead 3-0 over the Huskies. The Gophers' Meghan Lorence scored her second goal of the game at the 8:40 mark on a power-play making it a 2-0 game. Minnesota sealed a 3-0 lead at the 18:01 mark of the period on a goal by Sarah Davis.Â
St. Cloud would hold the Gophers in the third and were able to get several shots on goal but were just unable to get any past the Minnesota goalie.Â
Earning her fifth consecutive start for St. Cloud Friday night was junior Julie Friend as she recorded 44 saves, while Minnesota's Amanda Leveille tallied 15 for the win. Friend sees her record move to 3-13-2 on the season with the loss.
The Huskies ended the game going zero-for-three on their power-play, while Minnesota finished one-for-three. Leading St. Cloud in shots on goal Friday night was senior captain Amy Olson, putting up four shots on goal.
St. Cloud State (4-20-3, 3-16-2-1 WCHA) and Minnesota (23-1-1, 17-1-1 WCHA) will be back in action Saturday for the final game of their series at Ridder Arena. The puck drop is set for a 7:07 p.m. start time.
