1/4/2014 5:16:00 PM | Women's Hockey
St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State women's hockey ended their series against No. 2 Wisconsin Saturday afternoon in the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center as the Badgers earned the sweep over the Huskies, 4-0.
Just 1:42 into the first period Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead as Sarah Nurse shot from the left face-off circle for the goal. An assist was charted to Jenny Ryan on the goal. The Badgers continued to extend their lead over St. Cloud in the first as Brittney Ammerman scored at the 4:17 mark and Kelly Jaminski at the 9:43 mark to end the period with a 3-0 lead.
Defenses were strong in the second period just like in game one on Friday night but Wisconsin was able to make it a 4-0 game at the 16:27 mark. Junior Katy Josephs fired a shot off from right in front of the net with the assists going to Blayre Turnbull and Ammerman.
The Huskies had multiple chances during the game but were just unable to get one past UW's goalie or a bounce to go their way to get on the board. Wisconsin would hold on to a 4-0 shutout over St. Cloud for the series sweep.
Starting between the pipes for St. Cloud was sophomore Katie Fitzgerald recording 41 saves, while Wisconsin's Ann-Renee Desbiens tallied 28 for the win. Fitzgerald moves her record to 1-7-1 on the season. Both teams were unable to capitalize on power-play opportunities Saturday as St. Cloud went zero-for-two and Wisconsin zero-for-three.
St. Cloud State (3-16-3, 2-12-2-1 WCHA) now heads on the road for three weeks starting out against Bemidji State Jan. 10-11. Game times are set for 7:07 p.m. and 4:07 p.m. respectively from the Sanford Center.
