Bemidji, Minn. – St. Cloud State women's hockey took to the road Friday, starting a six-game road stand against the Bemidji State Beavers. The Huskies sealed their fate in the third period defeating the Beavers 3-1.
Bemidji State came out in the first period taking a 1-0 lead over St. Cloud at the 12:29 mark on an even-strength goal unassisted by Kristine Grenier. The Huskies bounced back holding the Beavers to a 1-0 lead going into intermission.
St. Cloud came out in the second period on the penalty-kill that has been proving time and again to be effective for the Huskies this season as they kept Bemidji from scoring. At the 3:47 mark of the period junior Abby Ness was one-on-one with BSU's goalie to make it a 1-1 game. Ness shot from right in front of the net over the goalies' left shoulder off an assist by Julia Gilbert from left of the net.
Ending the second period, the Beavers led shots on goal 30-18 over the Huskies.
Defenses were strong to start the third period but St. Cloud's offense came through as Ness grabbed a bounce off the BSU goalie's pads putting it into the net for a 2-1 lead at the 9:48 mark. Ness was unassisted on the goal for her second of the night.
The Huskies would seal their fate with an empty-net goal by senior Molli Mott at the 19:41 mark of the third period for a 3-1 victory over the Beavers. Gilbert was charted with the assist on the goal.
Between the pipes Friday night was junior Julie Friend backstopping the Huskies with an impressive 44 saves, while the Beavers' Brittni Mowat tallied 28 saves. Friend moves her record to 3-9-2 on the season with the win.
Earning stars of the game for the Huskies was leading scorer Abby Ness as No. 1 and goaltender Julie Friend as No. 2.
