#7 St. Cloud State to battle #1 Minnesota in weekend series

Huskies will host Gophers on Oct. 31 and play at UM on Nov. 1
The #7 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (2-2-0, 0-0-0-0 NCHC) will play a home-home series against the #1 University of Minnesota (4-0-0, 0-0-0 B10). On Friday, Oct. 31, the Huskies will host the Gophers at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (5,371 cap./200x100) at 7:37 p.m. The Huskies will journey down I-94 on Saturday, Nov. 1 for a 4:07 p.m. game at Minnesota's Mariucci Arena (10,000/200x100). Both of these games will be televised live on Fox Sports North and Fox College Sports. Fans can listen to both games on KCML FM 99.9 (www.lite999.com) and KVSC FM 88.1 (www.kvsc.org). Fans can watch the Oct. 31 game on the web at NCHC.tv Â
STREAK STOPPED: The Huskies split a weekend series at #2 Union last weekend. On Oct. 24, the Huskies lost a 5-1 match against the Dutchmen with Ben Storm breaking the shutout with his first collegiate goal in the final minute of play...SCSU replied on Oct. 25 with a 3-2 victory. Brooks Bertsch notched the game winner in the third period while SCSU's Blake Winiecki and Andrew Prochno each scored second period goals for the Huskies. Charlie Lindgren was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 22 saves the game. The victory for SCSU snapped a 17-game winning streak and a 22-game unbeaten streak for Union - the defending NCAA champs. This marked the first time that SCSU had played at Union.  Blake WinieckiBREAKING THE ICE: SCSU freshman Blake Winiecki scored his first collegiate goal in SCSU's victory at Union on Oct. 25. Freshman forward Judd Peterson also added his first collegiate point with an assist on Bertsch's game winning goal on Oct. 25. Of note, sophomore defender Ben Storm also scored his first college goal on Oct. 24.
THE PROCHNO WATCH: Senior defender Andrew Prochno now has 77 career points and needs just 23 points to join the Huskies' 100-point club. He would be the first defenseman to join the club since Kelly Hultgren had 107 points from 1991-95. He is now tied for career points with former Husky and NHL notable Bret Hedican, who had 77 points during his SCSU career from 1988-91. Prochno has played in 115 games during his career at SCSU.

THE DALY SHOW: Senior Tim Daly earned the team's Most Improved Player award in 2013-14. He continues to impress this season on the blueline and currently paces the Huskies with 13 blocked shots, while Andrew Prochno ranks 2nd with 8 blocks this season.
RUGGED SCHEDULE: SCSU will get several early season tests in 2014-15. The Huskies opened with games against #4 Colgate and #2 Union, and this week the Huskies will play #1 Minnesota. The Huskies will follow with games against #19 Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 7-8 and #3 North Dakota on Nov. 21-22. SCSU is currently ranked #7 in this week's polls. On SCSU's 2014-15 schedule, a total of 26 games (out of 34) will be played against teams that received votes or are ranked among the nation's top 20 teams in this week's DI polls
NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP: Jonny Brodzinski led the Huskies with 41 points in 2013-14. He tallied 21 goals and 20 assists as a sophomore, which included two game winners and five power play goals. In two years at SCSU, Brodzinski had 43 goals, 31 assists and 74 points. Of note, Mark Hartigan owns the best two year start at SCSU with 49 goals (1999-01) and Jeff Saterdalen is tops at SCSU with 93 points in his first two seasons as a Husky from 1988-90. Brodzinski currently leads SCSU with 3 goals and 4 points this year.
NEWS & NOTES: SCSU is now 2-2-0 in play against ECAC teams this season. Overall, SCSU is 35-18-4 in games played vs. ECAC schools since making the move to the DI level in 1987-88...SCSU's other non-conference tilts this season will come against Minnesota, Bemidji State and Quinnipiac...SCSU junior goalie Joseph Phillippi is a member of the the Army ROTC at St. Cloud State University and trains with that group on early mornings throughout the season...Jonny Brodzinski has played in every game since his arrival here at SCSU, which equals 84 consecutive games on ice for the Huskies...Niklas Nevalainen leads SCSU this winter with a +3 on the plus/minus.
NCHC CHAMPIONS: St. Cloud State University captured the inaugural regular season championship of the NCHC in 2013-14. The Huskies finished the year with a first place mark of 15-6-3-0 in the always rugged NCHC. SCSU posted 48 league points to win the Penrose Trophy, while North Dakota trailed in second place with 45 points. This marked the second consecutive season that SCSU has won a regular season conference title. In 2013, the Huskies won the WCHA regular season championshp.Â
