#6 St. Cloud State Scores 5-3 Win Over #16 Minnesota Duluth

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #6 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (16-6-5, 10-4-3-0 NCHC) maintained its hold on first place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference with a 5-3 victory over #16 Minnesota Duluth (13-10-4, 8-7-2-2 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 14 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies relied on a big four goal outburst in the first period to take a commanding 4-0 goal, which helped offset UMD's 40-31 lead in shots on goal in the contest.
St. Cloud State opend the game's scoring at 2:03 of the first period when senior captain Nic Dowd took advantage of a power play situation to score with assists from Kalle Kossila and Ethan Prow. This was Dowd's team-leading 16 goal of the season.
Sophomore forward Joey Benik pushed SCSU's lead to 2-0 with his eighth goal of the season at 12:05 of the first period with assists from Daniel Tedesco and Joe Rehkamp. The assist was Tedesco's sixth of the year and it was Rehkamp's third assist of 2013-14.
Defender Kevin Gravel made it 3-0 for the Huskies with a goal just 33 seconds later at 12:38 of the first period. Ryan Papa and Kossila marked assists on the play, which was Gravel's fourth goal of the season.
To end the first period scoring blizzard, SCSU sophomore forward Jimmy Murray scored at 17:15 of the first on the power play. Cory Thorson and Andrew Prochno posted assists on the play for the Huskies.
In the second period, UMD battled back into the game with a goal by Andy Welinski at :22, which included assists from Austin Farley and Caleb Herbert. The Bulldogs closed the gap to 4-2 with a power play goal at 10:48 of the second period by Kyle Osterberg, which included assists from Willie Corrin and Tony Cameranesi.
UMD managed to outshoot the Huskies 19-11 in the second and they continued to apply pressure in the third by outshooting SCSU 11-6. The Huskies gained a big insurance goal in the opening minute of the third period when Murray netted his second goal of the evening at :39 on assists from Dowd and David Morley.
This was Murray's eighth goal of the year, while Dowd now has 13 assists and a team leading 29 points. Morley coined his 19th assist of the year on the play for the Huskies.
The goal proved critical as UMD's Farley scored at 17:01 of the third period to make the final 5-3. In the closing minute of play, UMD pulled its goalie but the Huskies were able to weather the storm and bring home the victory.
On the night, SCSU goalie Ryan Faragher tied his season game-high with 37 saves in the contest. He also had 37 saves in the Huskies' 6-4 win over Minnesota State on Jan. 25. Faragher now owns a 14-5-4 record in 2013-14 for the Huskies.
UMD netminder Aaron Crandall made 10 saves and allowed four goals in 20:00 of play before he was relieved by Matt McNeely at the start of the second. McNeely made 16 saves and allowed one goal for UMD.
The Bulldogs outshot the Huskies 40-31 in the game, while SCSU was 2-of-4 on the power play and UMD was 1-of-5.
