Warriors End Huskies Run at NSIC Tournament, 5-4

Sioux Falls, S.D. - St. Cloud State baseball had their run come to an end in the 2014 NSIC Tournament Friday afternoon as they fell in the final inning of the game to the Winona State Warriors by a final score of 5-4.Â
The Huskies had the lead for seven of the nine innings as they took a 1-0 lead in the second as Kyle Lieser singled through the right side on two outs for the RBI. Extending their lead in the fourth, St. Cloud posted one run on three hits for a 2-0 game over the Warriors. Karl Sorensen posted the RBI single through the left side to score Garrett Fischer from third.Â
St. Cloud held onto a 2-0 lead until the seventh inning when the teams traded runs for a 3-1 game. Eric Loxtercamp started the inning with a single to center field and moved around to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out. Zach Hoffmann then singled up the middle to score Loxtercamp.Â
SCSU was able to make it a 4-1 game in the top of the eighth as a balk by Winona's pitcher scores Reese Gregory from third. The Huskies were unable to hang on as the Warriors tied the game up scoring three runs on four hits in the eighth making it a 4-4 game. Winona held St. Cloud to three up and three down in the top of the ninth to come back and score on a sacrifice fly for a 5-4 victory.Â
Starting on the mound was senior Chris Kubitz pitching 5.1 innings of work allowing only two hits, while sophomore Reese Gregory came in as relief and pitcher of record to post 3.1 innings of work. Senior Nick Maiers also saw action facing two batters in the ninth.
With the loss the Huskies run in the NSIC Tournament comes to an end as they posted an overall record of 37-14 and went 2-2 in the tournament.Â
