The Huskies Come Up Short Against Minnesota Duluth
1/18/2015 5:24:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Â
Duluth, Minn.---The St. Cloud State Huskies (6-18-1, 3-14-1 WCHA) are defeated 3-2 by the University of Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, January 18.
Â
The Huskies were first on the board, when Junior forward, Molly Illikainen, scored her 7th goal of the season, on a wrap around play, sending the Huskies into a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. UMD responded just minutes later, tying the game 1-1 going into the first. Duluth found the net two more times in the game, extending their lead 3-1.
Â
St. Cloud State pulled goaltender, Julie Friend, with over 3 minutes to play, giving them a man advantage over the Bulldogs. The Huskies battled hard, controlling play in both the defensive and offensive end. Lexi Slattery took charge, carrying the puck into the offensive zone, finding senior captain Abby Ness open in front of the net. Ness capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a huge goal for the Huskies and closing the gap with 27 seconds left to play.
Â
The Huskies were unable to score two, but fought until the end, ultimately losing a game full of great opportunities for SCSU.Â
Â
Julie Friend was tested with 20 shots on net, while St. Cloud put up 14.
Â
The Huskies return to the ice next weekend, Jan. 23-24, for a home series against the Gophers.Â
