The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team will have to clear space in its trophy case at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center this week in order to make room for the latest honor bestowed upon the Huskies after their first place finish at the 2015 Kendall Hockey Classic tournament on Oct. 9-10 in Anchorage, Alaska.
The Huskies (2-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) capped their weekend up north with a big 6-2 win over host Alaska Anchorage (1-1-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage. The win coupled with SCSU's 3-0 victory over Alaska in the tournament's opener on Oct. 9 gave the Huskies a first place finish in the tournament.
SCSU gained the victory over UAA on the power of a three-goal first period that sealed the deal for the Huskies. Rookie Robby Jackson made a big splash in his debut on the ice with the Huskies' first goal at 5:43 of the first period. Rookie Jon Lizotte and sophomore Patrick Russell posted the assists on the play that made it 1-0.
The Huskies pushed their lead to 2-0 with a power play marker by senior Joey Benik at 8:50 of the first period. This was Benik's second goal of the new season as assists were carded by fellow seniors Jimmy Murray and Ethan Prow. Jackson completed the first period attack with his second goal of the evening at 11:23. Russell and senior Kalle Kossila each had assists on the play for SCSU.
In the second period, UAA rolled back into the fray with an even-strength goal by Tad Kozun at 2:56 that was assisted by Blake Tatchell and Jeremiah Luedtke. The Seawolves closed the gap to one goal at 5:30 of the second period with a marker by Matt Anholt that made it 3-2.
SCSU wasted little time in the third period to ice the contest with Murray's first goal of the year at 1:30. Senior David Morley posted the first assist on the play with the second assist provided to sophomore Nate Widman. The Huskies continued to pour it on with a power play goal by Morley at 7:03 of the third. This was his first goal of the season and third point of the tournament. Prow coined the loan assist on the play for the Huskies.
To end the night's scoring, SCSU sophomore Judd Peterson chalked up his second goal of the year with a shorthanded empty net goal at 11:44 of the third. Linemate Ben Storm added the solo assist on the play that completed the scoring at 6-2.
In the contest, SCSU outshot the Seawolves 32-17 as senior Rasmus Reijola had 15 saves and the win for the Huskies. Olivier Mantha made 26 saves for UAA in the contest. On the power play, SCSU was 2-6 and UAA was 0-5 in the game.
