St. Cloud State women's hockey falls in close contest vs. #2 Wisconsin

The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team lost a close decision against #2 nationally ranked University of Wisconsin by a 2-0 margin on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The decision moves SCSU's record to 2-4, 0-4-0 WCHA, while Wisconsin improves to 6-0-0, 4-0-0 WCHA. The Huskies will continue their WCHA season on Oct. 23 with a 7:07 p.m. match against league rival North Dakota at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
SCSU will complete its weekend set against North Dakota with a 3:07 p.m. game on Saturday, Oct. 24 at home. Tickets for both games may be purchased at the gate. All youth (grades 12 and under) will be admitted to all regular season home games this season for free at the HBNHC. SCSU students with a valid student ID card will also be admitted free to all regular season home dates in 2015-16.
The Huskies and Wisconsin battled to a scoreless tie in the first period as SCSU goalie Katie Fitzgerald charted 14 saves to keep the score 0-0. The Badgers finally broke the deadlock in the second period with a goal by Erika Sowchuk at 2:01. In the third period, UW's Annie Pankowski added an empty net goal at 19:39 to make the final tally 2-0.
In the contest, Wisconsin outshot the Huskies 34-14. SCSU's Lauren Hespenheide led the Huskies with four shots on goal in the game. On the penalty kill,SCSU was solid going 3-3 on the day. Fitzgerald completed the day with 32 saves and Megan Miller had 14 saves for UW. For her efforts, Fitzgerald was named the game's number two star by the assembled media.
