#7 St. Cloud State scores big 6-1 win over #4 North Dakota

The #7 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team battled back into first place in the NCHC standings with a 6-1 victory over #4 North Dakota on Saturday, Nov. 21 before a sellout crowd of 5,487 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The victory improved SCSU's overall record to 9-3-0 and moved the Huskies into a first place tie in the NCHC standings with UND (10-2-2 overall) at 5-1-0- apiece.
In a classic match between two NCHC heavyweights, St. Cloud State control the game's tempo early with a goal by Patrick Newell that gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 14:11 of the first period. This was Newell's third goal of the year and it was assisted by Robby Jackson and Niklas Nevalainen.
The Huskies pushed their lead to 2-0 at 5:40 of the second period with Daniel Tedesco's first goal of the season. Nathan Widman and Patrick Russell each had assists on the play for the Huskies. SCSU stretched its margin to 3-0 at 8:46 of the second period with a goal by David Morley. Newell and Jon Lizotte had assists on the play, which was Morley's fifth goal of the year for the Huskies.
North Dakota got back into the action with a goal by Troy Strecher at 14:21 of the second period, which made the tally 3-1. To cap the second period, Nevalainen posted his first goal of the season with a power play effort at 18:35 of the period. Blake Winiecki and Jimmy Schuldt each had assists on the play for SCSU.
In the closing period, SCSU's Ethan Prow posted his second goal of the season at 16:15 of the third as assists on his power play goal went to Joey Benik and Kalle Kossila. This was Kossila's team-leading 11th assist of the season. In the closing minute of play, Jacob Benson finished the evening's offense with his first goal as a Husky at 19:05. Lizotte and Jimmy Murray each chalked up assists on the play for SCSU.
On the night, UND outshot the Huskies 29-21. SCSU was 2-5 on the power play and the Husky penalty kill was on target going 3-3 on the night. Charlie Lindgren made 28 saves in the contest, which moves his record to 8-3-0 on the season. Matt Hrynkiw had 5 saves in the loss for UND, while Cam Johnson finished the game for the Fighting Hawks with 10 saves to his credit.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, Nov. 27 with a 6 p.m. game at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The second game of the weekend series at Mariucci Arena will take place at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29.
