St. Cloud, Minn. --- The St. Cloud State Women's Hockey team (6-7-1, 4-7-1 WCHA) find themselves on a four game win streak after a series sweep against the Ohio State Buckeyes (5-9-0, 3-9-0 WCHA) with a 4-1 win on Nov. 21 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
The Buckeyes were sent to the box 1:16 after puck drop when an interference penalty was assessed on Julia McKinnon. St. Cloud controlled the offensive zone and was awarded a 1-0 lead when Julia Tylke put her fifth goal of the season past the OSU goaltender. Molly Illikainen and Brittney Anderson were given the assists. Ohio found themselves short again late in the first when junior, Alex Makaric put a slap shot through traffic to score her second goal of the season and first career WCHA goal. Fellow juniors, Christa Moody and Payge Pena picked up the assists on the Huskies second goal.
St. Cloud's Caroline Markstrom was sent to the box for interference 3:16 into the second period. Seconds later the Buckeyes capitalized to close the lead 2-1. OSU out shot the Huskies 15-9 in the second period but strong goaltending and defense kept St. Cloud in the lead.
As the third period unfolded, the Huskies looked to extend their lead and succeed when Erickson found the back of the net on a power play. Anderson and Tylke recorded their second points of the game. Anderson continued to contribute to the Huskies offense when she scored her first career goal and the final goal of the game. Anderson has become an offensive force in her sophomore season with the Huskies, recording 1 goal and 10 assists. Pena got her second assist of the game, while Suvi Ollikainen tallied her first assist of the season.
Katie Fitzgerald was a brick wall in net holding the Buckeyes to one goal in 34 shots and was awarded the second star of the game for her performance. Fitzgerald won her first and second games against Ohio State in her four year career in the series.
The last time the Huskies won four consecutive games was during a five game winning streak on Nov. 9 2008 to Nov. 22 2008.
The Huskies will travel to St. Louis, Missouri over the Thanksgiving weekend to face Lindenwood on Nov. 27-28.
