St. Cloud, Minn. --- The St. Cloud State Women's hockey team (7-25-1, 4-21-1 WCHA) ended their last regular season home game with a 3-1 win over the Mankato State University Mavericks (3-28-1, 1-24-1 WCHA).Â
The lady Huskies found their scoring touch and senior goaltender, Julie Friend, was strong between the pipes, in her final home game wearing the cardinal red and black.Â
The first period featured two scoreless teams, as both teams also went 0-1 on the power play. The Mavericks held a shot advantage over the Huskies 11-7 going into first intermission.
As the second period unfolded, Mankato got on the board first. Nicole Schammel took control and gave her team a one goal advantage, when she scored her 11th of the year while the Mavericks were shorthanded. At the 14:27 mark of the second period, the Huskies tied it up at one, when Jenna Redford scored her first collegiate goal. Christa Moody added her third assist of the year on the goal and Molly Illikainen added her eighth, giving herself a season total of 17 points.
The game was tied 1-1 going into the final period of play, but Abby Ness changed that when she found the back of the net, early in the third period, to gain fourth goal of the season. Illikainen added her second assist of the game, and senior, Amanda Arbogast, tallied her third assist on the goal. Ness would add onto the Huskies lead when she put the puck into the empty net sealing the victory for the Huskies. Senior, Audrey Hanmer, received her ninth assist on the goal, and Arbogast, her second of the game.
Senior goaltender, Julie Friend, was strong in net for the Huskies, as she played her final home game at the HBNHC. Friend turned aside 31 of the 32 shots faced, and saved the Huskies lead late in the game when the Mavericks had a shorthanded breakaway opportunity, but were denied by Friend, to gain her 5th win of the season. Â
The Huskies travel to Wisconsin to face the Badgers in their final regular season series of the season on Feb. 20-22.
