Huskies open tourney vs. Henderson State
The #1 nationally ranked St. Cloud State University baseball team (51-3) will return to the NCAA Division II tournament in 2015 as the number one seed and host of the NCAA Division II Central Region tournament, which will be held at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. on May 14-17.
The Huskies will begin the double-elimination tournament on Thursday, May 14 with a game against number six seed Henderson State University (27-19). Â In the other first round games on May 14, #2 seed Minnesota State Univeristy (41-7) will play #5 seed Missouri Southern University (40-12) and #3 seed Emporia State University (39-14) will play #4 seed Southern Arkansas University (39-16). Â All games are scheduled to be played at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. Â At this time, game times for the first day of the tournament are still being determined.
This mark's the Huskies return to NCAA tournament after missing out of postseason play in 2014. Â Under the leadership of eighth year head coach Pat Dolan, the Huskies gained NCAA tournament bids in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Â SCSU finished as the runner-up at the Central Region tournament in 2010, 2012 and 2013. Â This will also be the second time that SCSU has hosted the NCAA Division II Central Region tournament, as the Huskies were the tournament hosts in 2011.
St. Cloud State University earned the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament thanks to its first place finish at the 2015 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament on May 9. Â The Huskies posted a 10-5 win over Augustana in the title game on May 9 in Sioux Fallls, S.D. Â In tournament play, SCSU charted a perfect 4-0 record that featured two shutouts and three complete game pitching efforts by the Huskies.
SCSU also claimed the 2015 NSIC regular season championship with a 31-3 league record. Â This marks the most conference wins in a season for the Huskies and the team also set a new record with 51 victories to its credit this spring. Â On the topic of records, SCSU has also set new team standards this spring with 60 home runs (previous record of 58 homers was set in 2010) and 669 hits (previous record of 653 hits was set in 2010).
This will mark the Huskies' seventh appearance in NCAA Division II tournament play. Â SCSU has made regional appearances in 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 1991 and 1971. Â Of note, SCSU also advanced to the national tournament in the NAIA in 1969, 1958 and 1957. Â In NCAA tournament play, SCSU owns a 14-12 record since 1971.
