#3 SCSU men's hockey wins North Star Cup championship

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (22-5-1, 12-3-1 NCHC) claimed its second tournament championship of the 2015-16 thanks to a 5-2 victory over Bemidji State University (11-11-5, 7-9-4 WCHA) on Sunday, Jan. 31 in the title game of the 2016 North Star Cup at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
SCSU, which also won top honors at Alaska Anchorage's Kendall Hockey Classic this season, capped a strong weekend for the Huskies that opened with a victory over Minnesota State in the first round of the North Star Cup on Jan. 30.
This marked SCSU's second trip to the North Star Cup tournament and the Huskies improved their record in North Star Cup play to 3-1. SCSU won the consolation title of the tournament in 2014 and did not play in the four-team tournament featuring Minnesota's college teams last year.
St. Cloud State's Joey Benik opened the scoring at 1:20 of the first period with his goal that was assisted by David Morley and Patrick Newell.
Benik pushed the Huskies' lead to 2-0 with his second goal of the day at 12:57 of the first period. Newell and Ethan Prow both carded assists on the play for the Huskies.
Patrick Russell then scored his 13th goal of the season at the 5:23 mark of the second period. Mikey Eyssimont continued his hot weekend with his 11th assist of the season on the Russell goal.
Kalle Kossila connected for his 11th goal of the year with 5:42 left in the second period. Russell and Niklas Nevalainen assisted on the Kossila goal. It was Russell's 14th assist of the season and Nevalainen's 18th.
In the third period, BSU broke the shutout at 9:04 of the period with a goal by Kyle Bauman. The Beavers later in the period pulled their goalie with hopes of closing the gap by an empty net goal by Eyssimont iced the contest at 16:31 of the third. The goal was Eyssimont's third of the weekend and it helped him clinch the tournament's MVP honors.
BSU finished the day's offense with a power play goal by Phillip Marinaccio at 18:31 of the third period to make it 5-2.
In the game, SCSU and Bemidji State each had 24 shots on net as Charlie Lindgren gained his 21st win of the season with 22 saves to his credit. BSU starter Michael Bitzer was the Beavers' goalie of record with eight saves and four goals allowed in 34:18 of play. SCSU was 0-2 on the power play and BSU was 1-1.
The Huskies will continue their 2015-16 season on Feb. 5-6 with a pair of NCHC contests at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Fans can listen to both games on 99.9 MORE FM with Dan Terhaar on the call. Fans can also watch both games on the NCHC video stream at NCHC.tv/scsu
