St. Cloud, Minn.- The St. Cloud State University Women's Basketball team dropped their regular season opener against the University of Jamestown on Nov. 12 at Halenbeck Hall by a score of 81-69.
The game started in the Jimmies (4-2, 0-0 NSAA) favor as the visitors were able to hold the Huskies (0-1, 0-0 NSIC) scoreless for the first 5:15 of the first quarter. Freshman Madelin Dammann opened the scoring for the Huskies when she sank a three pointer to get the Huskies on the board. The Jimmies would keep control of the ball however and would go up 20-13 by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started strong for the home team as the Huskies were able to close the score gap down to just a four point deficient at 25-21 on the heels of good offensive pressure down low in the form of layups from Taylor Persche and Chelsea Nooker. However, the Jimmies would quickly turn the momentum into their favor as they would go on a 12-0 run to get up on the Huskies 37-21 late in the quarter. The Huskies would be unable to get their momentum going again in the half as the teams went to the locker rooms at halftime with the Huskies trailing 41-27.
The second half of the game would trend much of the same way for the Huskies despite a strong third quarter showing from Dammann that featured her making nearly every shot she took. Despite the Huskies ability to keep pace with the Jimmies they remained down going into the fourth 63-44.
The Huskies would control much of the game the fourth set as they would outscore the Jimmies 25-18 in the frame but the damage had been done and the visitors walked away with the victory as time expired 81-69.
The Huskies overall shot 38.2% (26-68), and went 8-31 from the field (25.8%). The team as a whole went 9-11 from the line and picked up nine offensive rebounds and 22 defensive rebounds.
St. Cloud State was led offensively by senior standout Chelsea Nooker who registered 15 points for the Huskies and picked up 3 steals. Senior Betsey Johnson also had a strong game for the Huskies picking up 12 points, and going 2-2 from the free throw line. Freshman Madelin Dammann had a strong showing in her collegiate debut picking up 11 points and going 3-5 from the field. Sophomore Mallie Doucette also registered double digit points for the Huskies picking up 10.
Alexis Watts led the Jimmies with 14 points in the game.
