St. Cloud, Minn.- The St. Cloud State Women's Basketball team came out ready to win on Sunday afternoon, when they defeated Dakota Wesleyan University 86-73 on Nov. 13 at Halenbeck Hall.
The Huskies (1-1, 0-0 NSIC) showed that they were not thinking about the results of last night's loss to Jamestown when they hit the court, jumping out to a 16-4 lead over the Tigers (6-1, 0-0 GPAC) with just over three minutes played in the game. The Huskies would not let up under any circumstances and played stellar defense to ensure that their lead stayed in tact. By the time the first ten minutes was up the Huskies lead had increased to 29-18.
The second quarter featured much of the same domination from the Huskies as they continued to control the ball and the game going up on the Tigers 56-33 at halftime. The Huskies only allowed the Tigers to score 15 in the second quarter while adding 27 points.
The third quarter trended the same way for the Huskies, as they were able to shutdown any Tiger runs to cut into their exceptional lead. The Huskies maintained their lead and entered the final frame up 76-55.
The final frame of the game saw the strongest push by Dakota Wesleyan. The Tigers were able to chip away at the Huskies lead, but the work they did would not prove to be enough to finalize a victory, as the Huskies would hold off the offensive flurry and win the game 86-73.
St. Cloud State enjoyed outstanding shooting percentages as they shot 30-58 (51.7%) from inside the arch and 13-25 (52%) from the field. The Huskies also went 13-19 (68.4%) at the line. The Tigers meanwhile shot 23-57 (40.4%) inside, 5-27 (18.5%) from the field, and an impressive 22-25 (88%) from the line.
Betsey Johnson who had an outstanding game for the Huskies putting up 26 total points, going a notable 5-8 from the field, led the Huskies. Three other Huskies recorded double-digit points for St. Cloud State with Chelsea Nooker netting 18 points, Madelin Dammann had 13, and Amanda Christianson added 11. Nooker also led the Huskies in rebounds, grabbing five, and assists dishing out six.
