Men’s Basketball Fights Back To Defeat Minot State, 82-71

St. Cloud, Minn. – Redshirt sophomore Gage Davis put up a standup performance of a career-high 38 points along with 17 rebounds in leading the St. Cloud State (9-6, 5-1 NSIC) to an 82-71 victory over Minot State (6-7, 2-5 NSIC) on Friday, Dec. 30, in Halenbeck Hall.
Davis' 38 points was a career-high and the most points the program has had since Taylor Witt scored 39 points against Augustana during the 2011 season (3/2/11). His 17 rebounds were one off his career high of 18 set against Bemidji State earlier this season (12/3/16). Six of his 17 rebounds were on the offensive end. Davis also shot 15-for-23 from the field and 8-for-9 from the charity stripe in reaching 38. His previous career high was 36 against Wayne State (1/16/16). Davis also totaled three assists, two blocks and a steal to help aid the team to victory.
Beside the 38 points from Davis, senior Scottie Stone recorded 22 points including three three-pointers and five made free throws in seven attempts. Stone also recorded five rebounds. Fellow senior Mark Hall contributed six points, five assists and two steals. Junior Jon Averkamp totaled seven points. Junior Andy Foley put up three points, four rebounds and three steals.
Minot State put three players in double figures led by Nathan Mertens 17. Stevan Jovanovic contributed 13 points and four rebounds. Trevor Rothstein tallied 11 points and seven rebounds
The Huskies outshot the Beavers, 48.3 percent (28-for-58) to 43.9 percent (25-for-57). SCSU only were able to hit 3-for-18 three-point attempts in the game, while Minot State knocked down seven threes in 19 attempts (36.8 percent). SCSU did hit 23 free throws in 30 attempts (76.7 percent). The Huskies also held the rebounding edge at 37-33.
SCSU trailed at the break, 36-31, but then fought back in the second half to outscore MSU by a 51-35 margin. The game featured six tied scores and six lead changes. The Huskies took the lead for good, 44-42, on a made jumper from Stone with 13:56 remaining in the contest. The team's largest lead was 15 points, 64-49, on the second of two made free throws from Averkamp. The largest deficit that the team faced with nine, 25-16, on a made three from Rothstein.
The Huskies continue the home stand and welcome in University of Mary on Dec. 31 for a contest starting at 6 p.m.
Notes
- Gage Davis has now lead the team in scoring in 11 of the 15 games.
- This was his first 30-point game since he put up 36 points against Wayne State last season.
- Overall, Davis has now scored 30 or more points in three career games.
- This was the 10th time he has totaled 20 or more points in a game this season and the 24th time his career that he has hit the mark.
- Scottie Stone's 22 points was the sixth time that has scored more than 20 points in a contest this season and marked the 26th game in his career that he has topped the barrier.
- The team has won the battle of the boards in 14 of the 15 games this season.
- SCSU is 26-12 at Halenbeck Hall since the start of the 2014-15 season.
