Men’s Basketball Rallies In Second Half for 88-73 Victory Over the University of Mary

St. Cloud, Minn. – Freshman guard Trevon Marshall scored a career-high 19 points to help lead the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (10-6, 6-1 NSIC) to its fourth straight victory by an 88-73 score over visiting University of Mary (5-9, 3-5 NSIC) on Saturday evening, Dec. 31, at Halenbeck Hall.
Marshall shot an efficient 7-for-9 from the field and knocked down all five of his attempts from the free throw line in scoring 19 points. He also totaled four assists and a pair of rebounds in 23 minutes. The 19 points topped his previous high of 10 points against Southwest Minnesota State (12/10/16).
Redshirt sophomore Gage Davis led the team in scoring for the 12th time in 16 games this season with his 21 points. It was the 11th time that has topped 20 points on the campaign and the 25th time he has achieved the mark in his career. He also pulled down eight rebounds and had five assists. On the week, Davis averaged 29.5 points per game and 12.5 rebounds a contest in the victories over Minot State and the University of Mary.
Senior Scottie Stone totaled 18 points, four rebounds and four steals. Fellow senior Mark Hall also reached double figures with 13 points. Junior Andy Foley recorded six points, five rebounds and five assists plus two blocks. Junior Jon Averkamp led the team in rebounding with 10 and also recorded eight points. Sophomore Brindley Theisen scored three with five rebounds.
The University of Mary had three players in double figures lead by Rickey Suggs' 17 points. Bryan Jefferson totaled 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds
The Huskies outshot the visiting Marauders by a 48.4 percent (31-for-64) to 38.8 percent margin (31-for-80). SCSU also knocked down 10 threes in 24 attempts (41.7 percent) compared to six in 26 attempts for UMary (23.1 percent). The game featured six tied scores and eight lead changes. For only the second time this season SCSU did lose the battle of the boards, 46-41, including a 18-5 margin on the offensive glass, but made up for it by shooting 16-for-17 from the free throw line. The game marked the second straight game and the third game in the last four that St. Cloud State has prevailed after trailing at the half.
The Huskies were trailing by a pair of points at the half, 41-39, but rallied to scored 49 points in the second half and limited University of Mary to 32 tallies. SCSU took the lead for good on the second of two made free throws from Davis early in the second half, 45-44. Those two made free throws started a 14-4 run. The team's lead reached nine with just under 10 minutes to go in the game, 70-61, on the made jumper from Davis with 9:35 remaining. The program opened up the largest lead of the contest in the final two minutes, 88-70, on a Davis layup and settled for the 88-73 victory.
The Huskies return to the court next week and travels to Bemidji State for an 8 p.m. contest on Jan. 6. The program continues the road swing the following day, Jan. 7, with a 6 p.m. game against Minnesota Crookston

- Gage Davis has now lead the team in scoring in 12 of the 16 games.
- In home games this year, Davis is averaging 22.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest while shooting 53.7 percent from the field and 81.4 percent from the free throw line.
- Scottie Stone with 18 points tonight has now scored in double figures in 15 games this season and 72 times in his career.
- Trevon Marshall's 19 represent his second time in double figures.
- Mark Hall's 13 points was his seventh time in double figures this season and the 21st time in his career.
