Men’s Basketball Sees Winning Streak Snapped In 92-89 Loss To Minnesota Crookston

Crookston, Minn. – Despite 28 points from redshirt sophomore Gage Davis, the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (11-7, 7-2 NSIC) saw its five-game winning streak come to an end in a tough fought 92-89 game on the road to Minnesota Crookston (6-9, 2-7 NSIC) at Lysaker Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan 7.
The Huskies had just taken a one-point lead, 89-88, on a made layup from Davis with 14 seconds remaining in the game. UMC's Chase Knickerbocker was then fouled and hit one of two free throws to tie the game up at 89 all. After a turnover and offensive foul against the Huskies, UMC's Harrison Cleary hit one of two free throws to give the Golden Eagles a one-point advantage, 90-89, with nine seconds left in the contest. Davis was then called for an offensive foul on the ensuing play with three seconds remaining in the game to turn the ball back over to the Golden Eagles and effectively end the game. SCSU's bench was issued a technical foul on the play when issue was taken with the call against Davis in the final seconds to make the final score 92-89 after the made technical foul shots.
Davis tallied 28 points for the second straight game as he hit 10-for-17 shots and 8-for-13 free throws. He also picked up eight rebounds and four assists. Senior Scottie Stone tallied 27 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field including five made threes. Junior Jon Averkamp recorded 15 points, eight rebounds and a block. Senior Mark Hall totaled seven points, three rebounds and two steals.
Harrison Cleary led the Golden Eagles with his 26 points. Connor Gamble had 18 points. Gable Smith recorded 17 points and seven blocks. Kobe Critchley totaled 10 points and eight assists.
The Huskies shot 51.6 percent from the field (33-for-64) and 41.6 percent from three-point range (7-for-17), but were upstaged as UMC shot 54 percent from the field (27-for-50) and 61.1 percent from three-point range (11-for-18). UMC also hit 27 free throws in 38 attempts (71.1 percent), while the Huskies were sent to the line 25 times and hit 16 of those attempts (64 percent). The game featured eight tied scores and seven lead changes.
SCSU held a 40-34 advantage at the half, but were outscored 58-49 in the last 20 minutes of game action. The Huskies largest lead was 13 early in the second half. The Golden Eagles held a six point lead in the final minute, but the Huskies fought all the way back to take the lead with 14 seconds remaining on Davis' layup setting up the wild last moments of the game.
The Huskies next return home to take on Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m.
