#4/6 Huskies battle back to gain 6-3 win over Alaska

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #4/6 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) staged an impressive second half comeback to gain a 6-3 victory over the University of Alaska (0-2-1, 0-0-0 WCHA) on Friday, Oct. 13 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, MInn.
UAF charged to a 3-0 lead in the first period with unanswered goals by Kylar Hope at 1:08, Ryker Leer at 3:29 and Troy Van Tetering at 8:29. The barrage was halted at 14:18 of the first period with a goal by Nick Poehling, which included assists by Jake Wahlin and Judd Peterson.
The Huskies never looked back from that point as they rolled off five unanswered goals and outshot the Nanooks 26-14 in the final two periods of play.
In the second period, SCSU closed the gap to 3-2 with a power play marker by Jimmy Schuldt at 14:09 on assists from Mika Ilvonen and Robby Jackson.
The third period capped the Huskies' comeback with four more goals that was started by Nick Poehling's second goal of the evening at 5:09 off the third with assists from Jack Ahcan and Peterson. This was Nick Poehling's fifth career goal at SCSU.
The game winner was then charted by Schuldt on the power play at 8:44. Jackson and Ryan Poehling posted assists on the goal, which was Schuldt's 21st at SCSU. The goals continued to roll in at 16:36 of the third with a tally by Jackson, which included assists from Ahcan and Will Borgen. To end the evening's scoring, Jack Poehling added an empty net goal to make the final 6-3 at 19:59 of the third. Ryan Poehling and Schuldt provided assists on the goal, which was Jack Poehling's second of the season and seventh in his career.
The assist was also Schuldt's 50th career point at SCSU and his 29th career assist. In the game, Schuldt had three points and leads SCSU in scoring this year with five points (3g/2a). Jackson also had three points in the game with one goal and two assists to his credit. In his career, Jackson now has 19 goals, 23 assists and 41 points. Peterson, Ryan Poehling, Nick Poehling, Ahcan also had two points apiece in the game.
In the nets, Jeff Smith gained his second win of the season with 22 saves to his credit. He had a shutout performance for SCSU in the final two and a half periods of the game. Anton Martinsson made 36 saves in the game for UA.
The Huskies will continue their 2017-18 season at 7:07 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14 with a game against Alaska at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
