#4/6 Huskies to host Alaska on Oct. 13-14

The #4/6 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) will return to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (cap. 5,371/200x100) on Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14 for a pair of home dates against the University of Alaska (0-1-1, 0-0-0 WCHA). The game on Oct. 13 will begin at 7:37 p.m. and the Oct. 14 puck drop is slated for 7:07 p.m. Both games are part of the Celebrate St. Cloud State festivities that will take place on campus on Oct. 12-15. SCSU HUSKIES HEADLINES:
BATTLE AGAINST BREAST CANCER - JERSEY AUCTION: SCSU will be wearing pink jerseys on Oct. 14 in order to raise awareness for the good work being down by Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Central Minnesota. The game-worn pink jerseys will then be auctioned off during an in-game silent auction in the HBNHC concourse. Fans will have the chance to make bids on player jerseys with the players presenting their jersey to high bidders after the game. All proceeds from the auction will go to help Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Central Minnesota.
SKATE WITH THE HUSKIES: The always popular Skate with the Huskies has been set for Sunday, Oct. 22 from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Fans will have the opportunity to skate on the ice at the HBNHC along with members of the SCSU men's and women's hockey teams. Players will be available for photos and autographs. The event is open to the public and admission is FREE. Call 320-308-137 for details on this event.
IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #4 ranking in the 2017-18 USA TODAY/USA Hockey Division I preseason poll. SCSU also gained a #6 ranking in the USCHO.com preseason poll for 2017-18. St. Cloud State was picked as the #2 team in the 2017-18 preseason NCHC poll. Of note, the Huskies received votes in the final USCHO.com poll of 2016-17.

NEXT HOME GAMES: Boston College will be making its first-ever appearance at the Herb Brooks National Hockey in St. Cloud on Oct. 20-21. Game times are at 7:37 p.m. on Oct. 20 and 7:07 p.m. on Oct. 21. The Huskies have only played Boston College once in the all-time series with BC gaining a 2-1 OT victory at the Florida College Hockey Classic in Estero, Fla. on Dec. 29, 2004. AWARD WINNERS: SCSU's Jeff Smith was named the NCHC Goalie of the Week and Jimmy Schuldt was named the NCHC Defenseman of the Week for their work in the Huskies' 4-0 win at MSU on Oct. 7. Smith made a career-high 42 saves in the game and charted his first shutout for SCSU (and his 2nd collegiate shutout...he had one during his year at UMASS-Lowell in 2014-15)...Schuldt scored the GWG in the first period at Mankato and also had one assist on Jacob Benson's third period marker. He also led the Huskies with four blocked shots.
MAVERICK ROUNDUP: The Huskies scored a 4-0 win at MSU on Oct. 7. This was SCSU's first shutout since a 3-0 win at Western Michigan in 2016-17. A strong effort in the nets by Jeff Smith helped the Huskies offset a 42-26 lead by MSU in shots on goal in the game. SCSU goals were scored in the contest by Jimmy Schuldt, Jon Lizotte, Jacon Benson and Jack Poehling (ENG). The win snapped a two-game losing skid against MSU...the shutout for Smith was SCSU's first shutout since a 3-0 win at WMU on Dec. 2, 2016. Zach Driscoll was in the nets for that game.
FIRST TIMER:- Rookie Kevin Fitzgerald, a resident of Oak Brook, Ill., posted his first collegiate point as a Husky with his assist on Lizotte's goal at 3:05 of the second period down in Mankato. Fitzgerald played junior hockey at Aberdeen (NAHL). He was one of seven players with assists in the game at Mankato. The balanced scoresheet also included assists by Judd Peterson, Patrick Newell, Jake Wahlin, Ryan Poehling, Schuldt and Will Borgen.
COLLEGE DEBUTS: Kevin Fitzgerald, Easton Brodzinski and Blake Lizotte all made their college playing debuts at Mankato on Oct. 7. Fitzgerald had one assist, four shots and was plus one in the game, while Brodzinski had one shot, one block and was +1. B. Lizotte added three shots and one block in the game.
ALMOST 60: SCSU senior forward and alternate captain Blake Winiecki needs one more point to reach 60 in his college career. Winiecki has played in 112 career games with 29 goals and 30 assists to his credt. Judd Peterson has also played in 112 career games with the Huskies and he has 31g/17a during his tenure in the Granite City.
RETURN TRIP: SCSU head coach Bob Motzko was selected once again to serve as the head coach for Team USA at the upcoming IIHF World Junior Championships in 2018 (in Buffalo). Motzko and Team USA won the IIHF World Championship in 2017. He was joined on that team by SCSU's Matt Chapman (video coach) and Jack Ahcan (defenseman).
NCHC POWER: Since the move from the WCHA to the NCHC in 2013-14, the Huskies have scored a 16-4-1 record against teams currently aligned with the WCHA. This includes a 4-0 win at Mankato this season. The Huskies' schedule in 2017-18 also includes WCHA opponent Alaska on Oct. 13-14 at the HBNHC.
ALASKA REPORT: In the all-time series against Alaska, the Huskies own a 7-6-0 record. At the DI level, the Huskies are 6-3-0...In their last meeting, the Huskies posted a 3-0 win over Alaska in tournament play at Alaska Anchorage in 2015-16. Coach Bob Motzko is 2-0 in games played againat Alaska. The last time Alaska played games in St. Cloud was on Jan. 6-7, 1989. The Huskies scored a 4-2 and 2-1 sweep in that series...In the last meeting against Alaska, Judd Peterson and Blake Winiecki both scored goals and assists were added by Mikey Eyssimont and Jacob Benson. Of note, SCSU went on to win the tournament title at UAA in 2015-16 and then went on to win 31 games that season to tie a team record.
