Volleyball Earns Five-Set Victory Over the University of Mary

St. Cloud, Minn. – Redshirt freshman Abby Templin totaled a career-high 14 kills to lead the St. Cloud State volleyball team (13-9, 5-7 NSIC) to a hard fought five-set victory over visiting University of Mary (5-16, 1-11 NSIC) on Friday evening, Oct. 20, at Halenbeck Hall. The individual match scores were 25-17, 24-26, 26-24, 14-25 and 15-13.
Templin had her 14 kills while hitting .344 for the match. She also three digs, a solo block and pair of block assists. Senior Becca Gruber also reached double figures with 12 kills while hitting .263. She also recorded four block assists. Senior Kayla Crane picked up a double-double with her team-high 24 assists and 12 digs plus two service aces. Senior Nicole Miller had five kills, 10 digs and three service aces. Junior Micah Nier recorded seven kills. Sophomore Marah Mulso had six kills plus seven block assists. Freshman Erin Navratil provided a spark with her five kills, service aces and .455 hitting percentage in only two sets. Junior Krista Kuglin totaled eight kills. Freshman Maddy Torve recorded 23 assists plus three digs. Sophomore Clara Krenz finished one dig away from her career-high with a match-high 33 against UMary. The program hit .176 for the match with 57 kills, 55 assists, nine service aces and 79 digs.
The Marauders were led in defeat by 21 kills from Lauren Randall. She also had three service aces. Natalia Cruz had 12 kills and 16 digs. Amanda Lopes has 40 assists plus 13 digs.
The Huskies won the first set 25-17 and had an 6-2 run to end the set to earn the victory. Miller recorded three kills in the set.
SCSU fell in the second set by 26-24 count in a closely contest set throughout. Templin had five kills in the set.
The Huskies earned the win in the third set 26-24 with Templin having four more kills to lead the club.
The fourth set was all Mary in a 25-14 score. Gruber picked up four kills in the set.
The Huskies won the final set 15-13 with Nier, Miller and Navaratil all having three kills to lead the team to the set and match victory. The team got off to an early 9-5 lead only to see Mary ties things up at 11. Neither team was able to open up more than a two-point lead the rest of the way. SCSU finally won when Mulso and Gruber combined on a block to put an end to the Marauder.
The St. Cloud State volleyball team continues play in the NSIC and welcomes in Minot State for a 2 p.m. match at Halenbeck Hall on Saturday, Oct. 21.
