Men’s Basketball Defeats Minnesota Duluth, 80-68

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team (7-3, 4-1 NSIC) earned an 80-68 victory over Minnesota Duluth (2-7, 0-5 NSIC) on Saturday, Dec. 16, at Halenbeck Hall.
Senior Jon Averkamp led the charge for SCSU with 23 points. He shot 10-for-16 from the field plus had four rebounds, a steal and a block. Junior Sean Smith had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Smith also recorded a pair of blocks and steals. Junior Brindley Theisen picked up 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Senior Andy Foley totaled eight points, two assists and two steals. Junior Gage Davis recorded eight points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal off the bench.
Minnesota Duluth was led by 30 points from Brandon Myer. Myer also had nine rebounds and a block. Jake Wilson scored 20 points in going 6-for-7 from three-point range. Luke Harris also reached double figures with 12 points plus had seven rebounds and two steals.
The Huskies shot 50.8 percent from the field (30-for-59), 40 percent from three-point range (8-for-20) and 80 percent from the free throw line (12-for-15). The team also had 35 rebounds, 24 assists, eight steals and five blocks. UMD shot 48.1 percent from the field (25-for-52), 52.4 percent from three-point range (11-for-21) and 53.8 percent from the free throw line (7-for-13).
SCSU never trailed in the game and held a seven-point lead at half time (44-37). The team edged UMD 36-31 in the final 20 minutes. The Huskies largest lead with 16 points at the 6:01 mark of the second half, 67-51, on a made layup from Davis.
St. Cloud State men's basketball keeps the home stand going and hosts Iowa Wesleyan in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
