Men’s Basketball Falls to Southwest Minnesota State, 82-59

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team (6-3, 3-1 NSIC) saw the program's four-game winning streak come to a halt in an 82-59 loss to Southwest Minnesota State (8-3, 4-1 NSIC) on Saturday, Dec. 9, at Halenbeck Hall.
Junior Brindley Theisen led the team with his 13 points. Sophomore Trevon Marshall recorded 12 points and a steal off the bench. Senior Andy Foley totaled 10 points, six rebounds and four assists plus two steals. Junior Sean Smith picked up six points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Senior Jon Averkamp led the team with his 10 rebounds. He also had six points, four assists, a block and a steal. Junior Adam-Heede Andersen led the team with his five assists.
Southwest Minnesota State had five players in double figures led by Carter Kirk's 19 points and 14 rebounds. Kirk also had three steals and a pair of blocks. Nick Dufault totaled 12 points off the bench. Michael Lee had 11 points. Ryan Bruggeman recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists plus two steals. Kenny Byers put up 10 points.
The Huskies were limited to 39.3 percent shooting from the field (22-for-56) and 53.3 percent shooting from the free throw line (8-for-15). The team did hit on 46.7 percent of their threes (7-for-15), but were also outrebounded 41-29. SMSU hit 52.5 percent of their shots (32-for-61) plus 50 percent from beyond the arc (8-for-16). The Mustangs also had 10 steals and 17 assists.
SCSU trailed at the half, 37-30, and lost the second half margin by a 45-29 score. There were three lead changes in the game. The Huskies largest lead was seven points, 14-7, with 14:38 remaining in the first half on a Theisen three-point field goal. SMSU built up a 25-point lead late in the second half, 78-53, on a made free throw from K.J. Davis before settling for the 23-point win, 82-59.
St. Cloud State men's basketball keeps the home stand going and hosts Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 4 p.m.

- The team's 59 points scored was the lowest of the season and the first time being under 60 points since scoring 57 against Concordia-St. Paul during the 2014-15 season (L, 59-57 – 1/3/15)
- This was the third game that Brindley Theisen has led the team in scoring.
- Trevon Marshall has now scored in double figures in three games this season.
- The game marked only the second time this season that Jon Averkamp did not score in double figures.
- Averkamp with 10 rebounds tonight has led the team in rebounding in three games this season.
