Huskies open NCAA Regional play with 12-0 victory on May 19

The St. Cloud State University baseball team (40-16) opened play in the 2017 NCAA Division II Central Region tournament with an offensive showcase that ended with a 12-0 victory over Missouri Western (32-21) on Friday, May 19 in Emporia, Kan.
The one-day delay in the start of tournament play for the Huskies due to bad weather last night did little to deter the success of SCSU. Â The Huskies and MWSU battled to a 0-0 draw after two innings before a six-run barrage in the third inning provided the Huskies with a 6-0 lead.

The Huskies continued their attack in the fourth inning with another run before chalking up five runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 12-0 lead.
At the plate, SCSU outhit the Griffions 15-8 in the game.  A total of five SCSU players posted multi-hit game on the day and it was led by designated hitter Mitch Mallek (Plover, Wisc./SPASH), who had four hits, three RBIs and two runs.  Mallek had two doubles in the game and now has 17 doubles this season for the Huskies. Â
Senior outfielder Logan Swann (Morgan, Minn./Redwood Valley H.S.) chalked up two hits, one run and four RBIs in the game. Â He had a base clearing triple in the game for the Huskies. Â Junior Cooper Maas (Burnsville, Minn.), junior Jackson Goplen (North St. Paul, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) and sophomore Judd Davis (New Ulm, Minn.) all had two hits and two runs in the game. Â SCSU's offensive attack was also highlighted by third baseman Ethan Ibarra (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty H.S.), who had three runs in the game.
On the mound, sophomore pitcher Cal Giese (Plover, Wisc./SPASH) was impressive with 6.0 innings of work and the victory. Â He is now 9-2 on the season. Â Giese allowed only four hits and no runs in the game, which included seven strikeouts. Â Freshman Aaron Hammann (Parker, Colo.) provided three innings of relief work. Â He allowed just four hits and had one strikeout in the game.
The Huskies will continue play in the 2017 NCAA DIvision II Central Region tournament with a game against Minnesota State University, Mankato.  The game will be played at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia, Kan. on Saturday, May 20.  Game time is slated for 1:15 p.m.
