#2 St. Cloud State Huskies to host #12 Western Michigan on Jan. 12-13

The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (13-3-3, 7-2-1 NCHC) will return to action in the NCHC with a weekend series against #12 Western Michigan University (11-8-1, 6-4-0 NCHC) on Friday, Jan. 12 at 7:37 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7:07 p.m. Both games will be played at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.

IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #2 ranking in the 2017-18 USA TODAY/USA Hockey Division I poll on Dec. 11. SCSU also gained a #2 ranking in the USCHO.com poll this week...St. Cloud State was picked as the #2 team in the 2017-18 preseason NCHC poll. Of note, the Huskies received votes in the final USCHO.com poll of 2016-17. WMU is ranked #12 in both polls this week.
HOCKEY DAY MINNESOTA: The city of St. Cloud will host the 2018 Hockey Day Minnesota on Jan. 20. This day celebrates the sport of hockey in the state of Minnesota and it will include a weekend of fun activities in St. Cloud. On Jan. 19, the SCSU Men's and Women's Hockey Alumni teams will be playing a game on the outdoor rink, which will be set up at Eastman Park on the shores of Lake George in St. Cloud. On Jan. 20, the SCSU women's hockey team will play UMD at the outdoor rink at 1 p.m., while the SCSU-Minnesota State game at 5 p.m. will be played back at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center and featured on Fox Sports North Plus. The day will also include high school games at the outdoor rink along with a concert and fan activities. For complete details, please visit scsuhuskies.com/HockeyDayMinnesota

SUPER START: SCSU's 13-3-3 start is the best 19-game start to a season since the Huskies went 16-2-1 to open the 2001-02 season.
OLYMPIC DREAMS: The USA men's hockey team will feature two SCSU Huskies at the Winter Olympic Games in 2018. Current SCSU blueliner Will Borgen has been selected to the team along with former Husky forward Garrett Roe. Borgen and Roe will join a list of 15 Huskies who have competed in the Olympics. Other former SCSU hockey players to play for Team USA include Bret Hedican (1992 and 2006), Ryan Malone (2010), Mark Parrish (2006), Matt Cullen (2006) and Andreas Nodl (2014). Of note, former Husky hockey player Rikard Gronberg will serve as head coach for Team Sweden at the 2018 Winter Games. Roe played for SCSU from 2007-11 and ranks first in the team records with 113 assists and third with 178 points (65g/113a). He is currently playing professional hockey in Switzerland this winter. Borgen has 1g/7a for the Huskies this season.
THE WEEKEND UPDATE: The Huskies split a weekend home-home series against #10 Minnesota. On Jan. 6, the Huskies charted a 5-2 win over the Gophers at the HBNHC. Blake Winiecki, Mikey Eyssimont (2), Easton Brodznski and Jack Ahcan all had goals in the victory as Jeff Smith earned his 8th win of the season with 21 saves in the game. The win was SCSU's fifth consecutive win over the Gophers. The Huskies then completed the series with a tough 2-0 loss at Mariucci on Jan. 7. Despite outshooting the Gophers 34-21, SCSU was not able to solve UM goalie Mat Robson. This marked the first time since a 3-0 loss vs. North Dakota on Nov. 19, 2016 that the Huskies had been victims of a shutout. Of note, the last time SCSU was shutout on the road was a 4-0 setback against Minnesota in St. Paul on Mar. 30, 2014 at the West Regional.
HIS STOCK IS RISING: Junior forward Mikey Eyssimont continues his offensive surge. On Jan. 5, Eyssimont led SCSU with two goals and one assist to gain the top star in the game. He ranks first on the team with 8 goals and second with 20 assists and third with 12 assists. He has six goals in his last eight games and 13 points in his last 10 games played. In his career, Eyssimont now has 36g/47a for 83 points and that makes him SCSU's top active career point leader. He is a draft pick of the LA Kings.
HOME COOKING: The Huskies are 10-0-1 at home this season. The last time that the Huskies lost at home was a 2-1 loss on March 4, 2016 vs. Colorado College. The 2-0 loss at Minnesota on Jan. 7 also marked the first time this season that the Huskies have lost a game played in the state of Minnesota.
BALANCED ATTACK: SCSU has had success this season due to a very balanced attack. The Huskies have 12 players with +10 points this season and three players with 20-or-more points this year. The Huskies also have seven players with six-or-more goals this season. As a team SCSU ranks third in the nation on scoring with an average of 3.89 goals per game. The Huskies have outscored their opponents 74-40 this season and they rank fifth in the nation on defense with an average of 2.11 goals allowed per game this winter.
SPOTLIGHT ON SCHULDT: The Huskies' team captain Jimmy Schuldt continues to pace all NCAA DI blueliners with 1.16 points per game this season. He leads SCSU with 22 points and 16 assists this winter and is a strong post-season honors candidate for 2018. He is a quarterback on the SCSU power play that ranks 8th in the nation at 24.7% and also leads all NCAA players with a +20 on the plus/minus and ranks among the top NCAA defenders with 49 blocked shots this year.
BIG GAME FOR BLAKE: Blake Lizotte hit a career game high with his three assists against Minnesota on Jan. 6. On the season, Lizotte has 1g/9a. He hails from Lindstrom, Minn.
HUSKIES vs. WMU: SCSU is 10-3-3 in the all-time series against WMU. This weekend marks the first meetings between the two teams in 2017-18. SCSU will also play at WMU on Feb. 16-17 in Kalamazoo. Last year, SCSU posted a 3-0 shutout and a 5-5 OT tie at WMU. SCSU is 7-0-1 in the last eight meetings against WMU with the last loss coming with a 3-2 setback on Jan. 24, 2015 at the HBNHC. Of note, SCSU has never lost a game against WMU in Kalamazoo...in 11 games played against WMU during his college career, Blake Winiecki has 4g/7a scored against the Broncos.
