#1/2 Huskies fall 2-0 at Minnesota on Jan. 7
1/7/2018 9:11:00 PM | Men's Hockey
The #1/2 ranked St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (13-3-3, 7-2-1 NCHC) fell to #10 Minnesota (13-10-1, 4-7-1 B10) on Sunday, Jan. 7 before a crowd of 7,917 at 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Huskies took an apparent 1-0 lead in the second period when Mikey Eyssimont scored on a blast from just inside the blue line. However, Gopher Coach Don Lucia challenged the goal and the Big Ten officiating crew ruled that the Huskies had too many men on the ice and they disallowed the goal.Â
Early in the third period, an errant Husky pass ended up right on the stick of Gopher Junior Darian Ramanko and he buried the puck past Huskies' goalie David Hrenak to score the game's first goal unassisted at the 3:10 mark. Â
Despite dominating play in the third period and outshooting the Gophers 15-5 in that period, the Huskies were not able to put the puck past Sophomore Goalie Mat Robson in the decisive stanza. Â
After the Huskies pulled Hrenak for an extra attacker, the Gophers Mike Szmatula scored in the empty net with 39 seconds to play to seal the 2-0 victory for the Gophers. Jack Ramsey assisted on the goal.Â
Hrenak was named the game's third star for his stellar effort in net, turning away 21 Gopher shots.
The loss dropped the Huskies road record to 3-3-2 on the season and it was the Huskies first loss to the Gophers in six games dating back to November 1, 2014. Â
SCSU again outshot the Gophers 34-21 on the evening. The Huskies were 0-3 on the power play and UM was 0-2.Â
The Huskies return home to resume play in the always rugged NCHC next weekend when they host the Western Michigan Broncos at 7:37 pm on Friday and 7:07 on Saturday.  You can get tickets at 877-SCSUTIX or www.scsutickets.com.Â
