SWEEP! #4/6 St. Cloud State tops #13 Omaha 6-2 on Feb. 3

The #4/6 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (17-6-3, 11-4-1 NCHC) completed its sixth weekend sweep of the season with a big 6-2 win over #13 Omaha (14-13-1, 7-11-1 NCHC) on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The triumph over the Mavs capped another strong weekend for the Huskies, which started with a 5-3 win on Friday, Feb. 2 at home.
SCSU got the ball rolling early with a power play goal by Robby Jackson, who was assisted on his snipe by Jack Ahcan and Mikey Eyssimont at 4:56 of the first period. This was Jackson's team leading 12th goal of the season. The Huskies continued their run at 18:53 of the first period with a goal by Eyssimont, which was assisted by Kevin Fitzgerald and Jimmy Schuldt. This was Eyssimont's 11th goal of the year and it was Schuldt's 20th assist of the year.
The Huskies extended their lead to 3-0 with a goal by Blake Lizotte at 1:44 of the second period. Fitzgerald and Eyssimont added assists on the play, which was Lizotte's fourth goal of the season. The assist was Fitzgerald's 10th of the year and it was Eyssimont's 17 assist and 28th point of 2017-18.
Omaha staged a brief rally with back-to-back goals by Riley Alferd at 2:10 and Zach Jordan at 6:04 of the second period, which made the tally 3-2 in favor of SCSU. The Huskies' Jake Wahlin quieted the storm with his fifth goal of the season at 12:09 of the second. Luke Jaycox and Patrick Newell provided helpers on the play.
On the power play, SCSU Olympian Will Borgen pushed the Huskies' lead to 5-2 with a marker at 16:45. His slapshot from the left circle was set up by Schuldt and Ryan Poehling. This was Borgen's second goal of the year and it came on the eve of his departure for the 2018 Winter Olympics, where he will be part of Team USA in the men's hockey competition along with former Husky forward Garrett Roe.

To cap the evening, Easton Brodzinski scored at 5:03 to make the final score 6-2. The goal was Brodzinski's 10th of the season, while assists were credited to Ryan Poehling (14th of the year) and Jackson (17th of the year). Of note, Jackson continues to lead the team in 2017-18 with 29 points (12g/17a).
On the evening, SCSU hit the 40-shot plateau for the second consecutive night as they outshot Omaha 41-26. On the power play, SCSU was 2-2 and 2-2 on the penalty kill.
Jeff Smith was the goalie of record for SCSU with 24 saves in the contest. Smith moved his season record to 10-2-3 on the season. Evan Weninger had 35 saves for Omaha.
