#24 Huskies Embark on Seven Day Journey to Tucson, Arizona

Since 2014, St. Cloud State is 31-3 in games that are played in Arizona during their spring training trip.
TUCSON, Ariz. – After a mid-week sweep over non-conference opponent, Wisconsin Parkside on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at US Bank Stadium, the St. Cloud State baseball team (4-1, 0-0 NSIC) will play seven games in seven days at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona.
SPRING TRAINING PREVIEW
St. Cloud State will face off against three NAIA opponents and three NSIC opponents in this year's Tucson Invitational Games. Each game will be called live by Thomas Breach on the KVSC Sports Stream.
FRIDAY, GAME 1: SCSU vs. Ottawa University, AZ (4:30 PM CT)
Scouting Report: 2018 marks the inaugural season for the Spirit as a collegiate program at the NAIA level. The team is comprised of three seniors, 19 juniors, one sophomore and 17 freshmen. Notable standouts for the Spirit include Chandler Reynard (INF/OF | .387, 5 RBI's) and Cole Anderson (RHP | 2-0, 14 IP). The Spirit are 4-11 overall thus far in their inaugural season.
GAME 2: SCSU vs. Grand View University, Iowa (8:00 PM CT)
Scouting Report: The Vikings are 3-4 overall and have proven to be a team that does not allow easy opportunities on defense. Grand View has not allowed more than six runs in a game this season and has not lost by more than three runs.
SUNDAY, GAME 3: SCSU VS. Northern State University (1:30 PM CT)
Scouting Report: St. Cloud State was 3-1 against the Wolves in 2017. Northern State was able to record a 3-2 non-conference victory over the Huskies in last year's Tucson Invitational. In conference play, SCSU traveled to Aberdeen to face off against the Wolves and recorded a mid-week sweep (7-0, game one | 9-2 games two). Shannon Ahern recorded a complete-game shutout where he only allowed three hits in his seven innings of work in the first game of the series. The Wolves finished 24-26 overall last season, and 5-4 in the 2017 Tucson Invitational.
MONDAY, GAME 4: SCSU VS. Southwest Minn. State (10:00 AM CT)
Scouting Report: Last season, the Huskies only saw the Mustangs twice, both of which were games in the Tucson Invitational. SCSU defeated SMSU, 12-3 in the first game and Zach Siggelkow was the winning pitcher of record, striking out six over five innings of work in relief. In the second game, St. Cloud State won 14-1 behind the offensive efforts of Mathew Meyer, Mitch Mallek and Jackson Goplen. Each of them recorded two hits while Meyer had four RBI's and a triple in the game. Last season, the Mustangs finished 15-33 overall and went 5-5 in the 2017 Tucson Invitational.

In last year's season opener at US Bank Stadium, the Huskies fell 3-1 despite a scoreless three-inning relief appearance from Dominic Austing. In game two of the opening series, Jordan Joseph was 2-4 with a double, a triple and three RBI's. Bo Schmitz was 2-4 with a double as well and had one RBI on the day. Jackson Goplen was 1-3 with a triple and one RBI while Mathew Meyer was also 1-3 with one RBI. Cal Giese recorded the win while only allowing one run and recording five strikeouts over five innings. In NSIC play, the Huskies won the series 3-1 which included a Saturday sweep to seal the series win. Judd Davis totaled three RBI's between both games in the Saturday sweep. Last year, the Golden Bears finished 23-26 overall and went 0-2 in the NSIC Tournament to Augustana and Minnesota Duluth. Concordia-St. Paul opens their season on March 5th vs. Minot State at US Bank Stadium. Key returners for the Golden Bears include IF/OF Isaac Hormann and RHP, Gus Varland who were each named NCBWA Preseason All-Region selections. Hormann was the 2017 NSIC Gold Glove Second Baseman and an All-NSIC First Team selection. Varland was 7-3 with a 3.27 ERA over 63.1 innings in 2017.
THURSDAY, GAME 7: SCSU VS. Olivet Nazarene University, Ill. (10:00 AM CT)
Scouting Report: The Tigers are 6-4 overall this season in NAIA play. Olivet Nazarene has five of their nine starters in the field hitting over .365 with Ben Hill leading the way with a .484 average thus far. Senior, Nick Campe has a 2.63 ERA in 13.2 innings of work so far for the Tigers. He was an All-Conference selection for ONU in 2017. Last season, the Tigers finished 32-19 overall and ended their season in the CCAC Tournament.
