TUCSON, Ariz. - The St. Cloud State baseball team (4-3, 0-0) fell by a score of 8-4 to Ottawa University and 4-3 to Grand View University in the first day of action at the Tucson Invitational Games.
Both Ottawa and Grand View compete at the NAIA level and this is the first time the Huskies have lost two games while playing in the Tucson Games.Â
On the day, the Huskies' bats were quiet when runners in scoring position. St. Cloud State stranded 12 runners in scoring position between both games. Jackson Goplen totaled two RBI's on Friday while Bo Schmitz, Caeden Harris, Isaac Matchinsky Ethan Ibarra and Mathew Meyer each recorded one RBI.
In the first game, the Huskies found themselves in an eight run deficit until the eighth inning when SCSU rallied and scored four runs by drawing walks and extending counts to put runners in scoring position. Zach Iten was the starter on the mound and went three innings while only surrendering two runs and four hits in his first collegiate start. Iten was the pitcher of record for St. Cloud State, receiving the loss for game one.
In a back-and-forth pitcher's duel in the second game of the twin-bill, Trevor Koenig made his collegiate debut and did not disappoint. In 5.1 innings of work, Koenig struck out seven batters and only allowed two runs. Despite Koenig's stellar performance, SCSUÂ was walked off in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single through the right side. Nathan Strobel received the loss for the Huskies in game two.
St. Cloud State returns to action on Sunday in a NSIC match-up against Northern State at 12:30 PM MST. The two losses to NAIA opponents, Ottawa and Grand View affect the Huskies' overall record, but do not affect the Huskies' NCAA regional record.
