St. Cloud State and MSU-Mankato will return to action on Monday afternoon at 6:00 and 8:00 PM.
Bemidji, MINN. – The St. Cloud State baseball team (22-11, 15-6 NSIC) recorded a Sunday split against the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks (26-9, 21-5 NSIC) after falling in game one, 5-3 and winning in game two by a score of 9-6.
GAME ONE SUMMARY (SCSU 3 | MSU 5)
Kyle Boser (3-4) was the pitcher of record for SCSU even though he was nothing short of spectacular in his start against Minnesota State. The junior right-hander went the distance for SCSU, logging eight innings and seven strikeouts while only walking one. Boser only allowed two earned runs on eight hits in his start.
The Husky bats were hot out of the gates when they took a 2-0 lead over MSU courtesy of three consecutive hits and back-to-back RBI doubles from Isaac Matchinsky and Ethan Ibarra.
However, following the Huskies' two-run second inning, they would not put another run up until Aaron Hammann homered to left in the bottom of the ninth to reduce the Huskies' deficit to two.
Mankato would tie the game after scoring one run in both the third and fourth innings.
In the top of the ninth, the Mavericks scored three runs on a fielder's choice, two errors and a single.
Hammann, Matchinsky and Ethan Ibarra were the only Huskies to record a RBI, while Hammann went 2-4 with a homerun in the ninth.
GAME TWO SUMMARY (SCSU 9 | MSU 6)
Freshman, Matthew Osterberg improved to 3-0 on the year after going 4.2 IP and striking out five, while also allowing five earned runs. Aaron Hammann would record the first save of his 2018 campaign by tallying two strikeouts and only allowing two hits in his 1.2 innings of work.
After MSU's Noah Bluth would single home Ty Buck to take a one-run lead in the first, Mitch Mallek would respond with the first Husky homerun of the game to tie the game at one.
Aaron Hammann and Isaac Matchinsky would then go back-to-back to send homeruns across and give the Huskies a four-run advantage.
Mitch Mallek would hit his second homer of the game in the fourth inning to put SCSU up 7-5.
St. Cloud State would go on to scratch two across in the sixth, then hold off a seventh inning rally from MSU to seal the 9-6 victory.
At the plate, Jackson Goplen and Mallek each recorded three RBI's. SCSU combined for four homeruns in game two and 10 hits as a team in their 9-6 victory.
