SCSU and Augie split in their 2018 midweek series, which was in Sioux Falls.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Fresh off of a 23-0 victory over #6 seed Winona State, the #3 seed St. Cloud State baseball team has advanced to the winner's bracket of the NSIC Tournament to face the #2 seed, Augustana College. First pitch against the Vikings is set for 4:00 at Sioux Falls Stadium (The Birdcage) on Thursday, May 10.

ROUND 2 PREVIEW
In Wednesday night's round one match-up, the Huskies totaled the most runs in NSICÂ Tournament history, dating back to 1999. All-NSICÂ catcher, Bo Schmitz accounted for seven of them while going 4-5 with two home runs. Caeden Harris, Jackson Goplen and Mitch Mallek combined for 11 RBI's while each of them also recorded a double in their multi-hit performances at the plate.Â
Schmitz' seven RBI's are the third most in SCSUÂ program history for RBI's in one game. The senior also scored five runs, which ranks third all time in SCSUÂ program history for runs scored in one game.Â
Dom Austing made the start for SCSU, tossing five scoreless innings and striking out three while only allowing one walk and two hits. The junior ace only threw 53 pitches in his outing.Â
Augustana opened their tournament run with a 10-0 victory over #7 seed, Wayne State. Jacob Blank threw eight shutout innings for the Vikings that consisted of seven strikeouts and three hits and one walk.
At the plate, Augie totaled 10 runs on 14 hits, five of which were extra base hits. Sam Baier and Lucas Wylie each homered for the Vikings while Jordan Barth and Whylie each collected three hits to pace the Augie offense.Â
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
On the mound, Augustana is expected to start senior right-hander, Tyler Mitzel. Mitzel finished the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record and 1.93 ERA over 46.2 innings pitched. Some of Mitzel's top performances include four seven inning efforts against Upper Iowa, U-Mary, Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State.Â
At the plate, Riley Johnson (.394), Jordan Barth (.364) and Ryan Nickel (.355) are each hitting over .350 while Barth leads the team in RBI's with 53.Â
The Vikings are always aggressive on the base paths, having stolen 147 bases in 166 attempts. Michael Svozil and Riley Johnson have each swiped 30 or more bags this season.Â
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The top eight teams in the final regular season standings will participate in the double-elimination tournament, which will be held May 9-12 at Karras Park and Sioux Falls Stadium in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The winner of the NSIC Baseball Tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Central Region Tournament. The NCAA Central Region is made up of 40 teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (15), the Mid-America Athletic Association (MIAA) (13) and the Great American Conference (GAC) (12). Automatic bids are awarded to the tournament champions from each conference with the final five spots awarded on an at-large basis. In all, eight teams will advance to the NCAA Central Region Tournament played on May 17-21 at a site to be determined.
The NCAA Division II Baseball Championships will take place May 26 to June 2 in Cary, North Carolina. The NCAA Division II Baseball Selection show will air via webcast at NCAA.com on Sunday, May 13 at 9 p.m. central time.
SERIES HISTORY
In the Huskies' series split with Augustana earlier this season, Dominic Austing and Kyle Boser were lights out on the mound for SCSU.Â
Austing carried a no-hitter through 4.2 innings and picked up the victory while only allowing one run and six strikeouts. Shannon Ahern would close out the ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.Â
Kyle Boser tossed eight innings while striking out six and only allowing one earned run. The Huskies would go on to lose the game on a walk-off walk after winning the series opener, 2-1.
At the plate, the Huskies were only able to scratch across two runs against Jacob Blank, and were shutout in game two. David Flattery was the winning pitcher of record for Augie, tossing seen scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and four walks.Â
Last season, the Huskies swept Augustana in a mid-week series played at Joe Faber Field. SCSU won 10-4, and 5-4 in games where Cal Giese and Miles Nablo picked up wins for the St. Cloud State. The Huskies walked off the Vikings in the bottom of the 11th in the series-deciding game off of a wild pitch where Aaron Hammann recorded the game-winning run.
After the mid-week series, SCSU and Augie met once again in the NSIC Tournament where the Huskies emerged victorious in a 3-2 thriller where Kyle Boser picked up the win in relief. Starting the game for SCSU was Cal Giese where he allowed two runs on two hits in six innings of work, where he also struck out eight batters.
Jacob Blank started for Augie in the conference tournament, where he did not allow an earned in 6.2 innings. Blank allowed four hits and one walk while hitting two Huskies and striking out five.
Over the past five seasons, the Huskies are 13-7 in NSIC conference and tournament play against the Vikings. SCSU has won two series, split two series, and split once against Augie during the regular season of the five-year span.
The Huskies are 5-1 in tournament play against Augustana, with their last loss coming in 2014.
HUSKIES'Â NSIC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The Huskies have won the NSIC tournament title in 2016, 2015 and 2011. Prior to their entry into the NSIC, the Huskies also won the North Central Conference title in 1991.

SCSU was ranked #6 in the latest NCAA DII Central Region poll. The region's top 8 teams will receive a bid to the upcoming NCAA DII Central Region tournament next week. If the Huskies can gain another NCAA bid this spring it will be the team's eighth since 2010 and its fourth consecutive NCAA bid since 2015.
