GAMEDAY PREVIEW | Huskies Open Regional Tournament Against Central Oklahoma

MAGNOLIA, Ark. - After being selected as the #6 seed in the 2018 NCAA Central Region Tournament, the St. Cloud State baseball team opens their NCAA tournament run on Thursday, March 17 at 8:30 PM CT against the #3 seeded Central Oklahoma Bronchos.Â
GAMEDAY NOTES
- The Huskies enter the NCAA tournament with a 29-15 record while going 1-2 in the NSIC conference tournament as the #3 seed.Â
- SCSUÂ was 21-8 in NSICÂ play, finishing them third in the conference regular season.
- 2018 marks SCSU's fourth consecutive NCAA Central Region Tournament appearance and their eighth appearance since 2010.Â
- St. Cloud State finished third in the 2017 Central Region Tournament as the #3 seed.
- Central Oklahoma won the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular season title and enters the tournament with a 35-19 record.Â
- The Bronchos advanced to the 2017 Central Region championship game after defeating SCSU in the semi-finals. UCO would go on to lose to Lindenwood.
- 2018 marks UCO's second consecutive NCAA Regional appearance.Â
SCOUTING THE BRONCHOS
- Four of UCO's hitters are hitting over the .300 mark, with Jake Dyer leading the way at .364. Kyle Miskovsky is not far behind, sitting at a .355 average while team RBI leader, Paul Kropf is at .324 while knocking in 51 runs on 70 hits.
- Kropf leads the team in homers with 15, while Xavier Freeman trails him with 12.Â
- On the hill, Ryan Lemoine has tossed a team-high of 85.2 innings while holding a 4.10 ERA in 14 starts. The senior right-hander is 8-3 and has struck out 70 batters while only walking 22. Opponents are hitting .241 against him this season.Â
- Right-hander, Tyler Culver paces the staff with 75 strikeouts over 67.2 innings in 14 starts and 16 appearances. Culver is 8-0 and holds a 5.19 ERA and has walked 39 batters. Opponents are hitting .262 against him on the year.Â
- Gaylon Viney is the Bronchos' top bullpen arm with a 2.96 ERA over 45.2 innings in 15 total appearances. The righty is 3-3 and has struck out 48 while allowing 34 walks.
DOM'S PLANÂ Â
Junior ace, Dominic Austing enters the NCAA tournament with a team-leading, 1.93 ERA and 6-1 record. In his 12 starts, he has tossed three complete games. Over 70 innings, Austing has struck out 64 while only walking eight.Â
Of note, Austing has made four starts at second base and holds a .313 average.Â
RED MEAT TRIO
The heavy hitting outfielding core of Caeden Harris, Jackson Goplen and Mitch Mallek are each hitting .320 or higher, with Mallek pacing the program at a boastful .400 mark. Harris trails Mallek for the team-high with .383. Mallek and Goplen each have 5 home runs on the season while Harris has three. Of note, Goplen leads the team in RBI's with 46.
BO KNOWS
Senior catcher, Bo Schmitz is hitting .353 with a team-high of seven homers. The All-NSIC and All-NSICÂ Tournament Team selection has tallied 42 RBI's on 60 hits. Behind the dish, Schmitz has only committed four errors in almost 300 chances.Â
MIKS IT UP
Sheldon Miks, a 2X All-American, has re-entered the Huskies' bullpen after returning from reconstructive UCL surgery. The captain has provided head coach, Pat Dolan with another arm out of the pen and has tossed 2.2 scoreless innings while recording four K's.Â
In his career, Miks is 17-5 with nine complete games over 23 starts. He has struck out 133 batters while only walking 16 in 166 career innings.Â
WHERE WE DROPPIN', BOYS?
At any given point in the Huskies'Â batting order, the Huskies are capable of dropping a big hit. Seven of the nine starters in SCSU's line-up are hitting over .300 while five of them have recorded 30 RBI's. St. Cloud State's team batting average sits at .322.Â
