
Huskies Explode to 23-0 Victory over Winona State in First Round of NSIC Tournament

RECAP
St. Cloud State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of a double from All-NSIC outfielder, Mitch Mallek and a single from senior slugger, Isaac Matchinsky.
In the second inning, All-NSIC catcher Bo Schmitz extended the Huskies lead to 4-0 after sending a two-run shot to left field that scored Ethan Ibarra.
The game would remain 4-0 until the fifth inning when Mitch Mallek reached on an error that would score Bo Schmitz from third. Following the error, senior captain Jackson Goplen doubled to center to bring home Mathew Meyer and Jordan Joseph. After Goplen's double, Caeden Harris put the Huskies up 10-0 by recording a bases clearing double to center field.
Bo Schmitz would then record his second homer of the night and put the Huskies up 13-0 in the fifth.
In the seventh, the Huskies would put up 10 runs on six hits and one error. Schmitz sparked the Huskies with a double to left center that brought home Ibarra. Mathew Meyer would then single home Schmitz and Goplen would reach base on an error to bring home two more runs. Reid Conlee, a freshman, recorded a sacrifice fly to put the Huskies up 18-0.
Following the sac-fly, Caeden Harris would send a 2 RBI single into center field to give SCSU a 20 run margin. Schmitz, Mallek and Goplen would then put together a trio of RBI singles to give the Huskies a 23-0 advantage for the eighth and ninth innings.
On the mound, All-NSIC second team selection Dominic Austing was very efficient in his 5 inning, 53 pitch shutout performance that included three strikeouts.
Matt Butler, Zach Iten, Zach Siggelkow and Logan Sandgren would each provide an inning in relief to solidify the shutout. As a staff, the Huskies held Winona State to no runs and four hits while only walking one.
TOP PERFORMERS
Bo Schmitz tallied seven RBI's on four hits and two walks while also scoring five runs. Schmitz recorded two homeruns in Wednesday's game, making that his first career multi-homerun game at SCSU.
The senior's seven RBI's rank third in program history for most RBI's in a game. Schmitz' five runs scored also rank 3rd in program history for most runs scored in a game.
Each of the Huskies' outfielders were 3-5 on the day, with each of them producing one double a piece. Harris led the group with 5 RBI's, while Goplen recorded four and Mallek totaled two.
UP NEXT
St. Cloud State advances to the winners' bracket to face the #2 seeded Augustana Vikings. First pitch against the Vikings is at 4:00 on Thursday, May 10th. The game will be played at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Augustana won their first game by a 10-0 margin over the Wayne State Wildcats. 2017 NSIC Pitcher of the Year, Jacob Blank was the pitcher of record for Augie.
