St. Cloud State drops 5-2 match against Colorado College on Nov. 16

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (2-4-4, 0-2-0 NCHC) ended its NCHC season opener weekend with a 5-2 loss to Colorado College (4-3-1, 2-1-1 NCHC) on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Colorado College opened the game's scoring at 17:14 of the first perid with an even-strength goal by Nick Halloran, which included assists from Chris Wilkie and Connor Mayer. The Tiger padded their lead to 2-0 with a goal by Andrew Gaus at 1:30 of the second period and then gained a 3-0 lead with a goal by Brady Smith at 6:49 of the second period.
The Huskies broke the shutout at 10:15 of the second period as Easton Brodzinski posted a power play goal with assists from Jami Krannila and Nick Perbix. This was Brodzinski's fifth goal of the season and his team leading third power play goal of the year. The goal also pushed Brodzinski's career power play goal total to 15.
Colorado College completed the second period scoring with a goal by Kristian Blumenschei at 15:09 with asssits from Sam Renlund and Ben Copeland.
In the third period, St. Cloud State chalked up a second power play goal in the game as Chase Brand scored at 2:21 of the third period to close the gap to 4-2. He was assisted on the PPG by Krannila and Perbix. This was Brand's first PPG as a Husky and it marked the third assist of the season for both Krannila and Perbix.
To close out the offense, CC added an empty net goal at 19:29 of the game by Christiano Versich.
In the game, CC outshot the Huskies 32-29. Nick Poehling, Jack Ahcan and Perbix all had four shots in the game. On the power play, SCSU was 2-4 and CC was 0-2. In the nets, Matt Vernon was the goalie of record for CC with 27 saves and David Hrenak had 13 saves for the Huskies. Joey Lamoreaux relieved Hrenak and saw his first collegiate ice time in the nets for SCSU with 14 saves in 30:22 minutes of play.
