Huskies remain undefeated with 5-3 victory over Omaha

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (3-0-0, 3-0-0 NCHC) remained undefeated at the NCHC Pod with a 5-3 victory over Omaha (2-2-0, 2-2-0 NCHC) on Sunday, Dec. 6 in Omaha, Neb.
The victory allowed the Huskies to remain undefeated (9-0-0) in games played at Omaha's Baxter Arena, which was opened during the 2015-16 season.
Omaha opened the game's scoring with a goal by Matt Miller at 4:53 of the first period. The lead was short lived as the Huskies' Veeti Miettinen scored an unassisted goal at 6:39 to tie the score at 1-1. This was Miettinen's first career goal at SCSU and his first collegiate point.
Omaha charged back to take a 2-1 lead at 8:53 of the first with a goal by Brock Bremer. To open the second period's scoring, SCSU's Easton Brodzinski scored at 9:00 with a solo assist from Jami Krannila. This was Brodzinski's first goal of the season and his 43rd career goal at SCSU.
SCSU took a 3-2 lead in the game at 10:00 with a goal by Krannila, which included an assist by Miettinen and Brendan Bushy. The goal was Krannila's first goal of the season and his sixth at SCSU. Miettinen added his first assist as a Husky on the goal and it was Bushy's first point of the 2020-21 season.

Omaha's Taylor Ward then closed the gap to 4-3 with his goal at 11:32. The play set-up the eventual game winner for SCSU, which was posted by rookie blueliner Brady Ziemer, who scored a goal at 18:45 of the second with assists from Miettinen and Luke Jaycox. The goal was Ziemer's first as a college play and it was also Jaycox' first point of 2020-21. Of note, Miettinen ended the game with one goal and two assists to his credit.
To ice the contest, SCSU's Jared Cockrell scored at 14:59 of the third period to make the final score 5-3. Kyler Kupka posted the assist on the play, which was Cockrell's first goal at SCSU. He played his first three seasons of college hockey at Colgate and now has notched 24 goals as a collegiate player.
SCSU outshot Omaha 35-27 on the evening as Jaxon Castor gained the goalie victory for the Huskies with 24 saves. This was his first start of the year and his second career win at SCSU. On the power play, SCSU was 0-2 and its was a perfect 3-3 on the penalty kill.
