Former St. Cloud State University pitching ace Nick Anderson is now in his second season of major league baseball with the Tampa Bay Rays. A relief pitcher, Anderson has played in 11 games this summer with a 1-0 record, three saves and 15 strikeouts.
A standout pitcher for SCSU from 2009 to 2011, Anderson's MLB career totals include 125 strikeouts, six wins, fours saves and a 2.91 ERA. After he left SCSU, Anderson played one season of baseball at Mayville State before embarking on his pro career with stops at Rockford (Frontier League), Cedar Rapids (Minnesota Class A), Fort Myers (Minnesota Class A), Chattanoga (Minnesota Class AA) and Rochester (Minnesota Class AAA). He was traded to Miami before the start of the 2019 season and made his major league debut with the Marlins in 2019, before being traded to Tampa in midseason 2019.Â
An All-NSIC and All-Region selection at SCSU in 2010, Anderson notched 14 victories and 151 strikeouts during his college career at SCSU. In 2010, Anderson was 8-4 with 88 strikeouts to his credit. He helped the Huskies post a 41-17 record that season and also advance to the championship game of the NCAA DII Central Region tournament in Farmington, N.M. Of note, this was SCSU's first NCAA bid during the Pat Dolan era. Since that notable season, SCSU has advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2011, 2012, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Anderson is one of six former Huskies who have gone on to play in the major leagues. This list includes Anderson, Jim Eisenreich, Bob Hegman, Greg Thayer, Dana Kiecker and Rip Repulski.
