
Huskies win seven events in dual with Minnesota State

ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University women's swim and dive team found plenty of success in its final dual meet before the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Swim and Dive Championships February 10-13 in Fargo, North Dakota. Though the Huskies fell to NSIC rival Minnesota State University-Mankato 172-128 Thursday evening, they saw plenty of success in the pool, as St. Cloud State won seven individual events and saw several other student-athletes finish in the top-5 in their respective competitions.
The Huskies got off to a hot start in the first event of the evening: 1-meter diving. St. Cloud State divers swept the podium, taking first through fourth place to earn 16 points towards the team's overall score. Meredith Matchinsky (St. Cloud, Minn. / Tech) earned first place behind a score of 259.95, while Madison Brinkman (Grey Eagle, Minn. / Melrose) was right on her heels, taking second with a score of 250.30. Brinkman and Matchinsky would flip places in the 3-meter competition, as Brinkman won with a score of 277.05 and Matchinsky finished second thanks to her score of 259.10.
Taylor Terfher recorded her best finish of the season, as she finished in third place for the Huskies with her score of 232.15. Alyssa Doherty (Cudahy, Wis. / Whitnall) additionally competed on the 1-meter board, finishing fourth with a score of 228.10.
St. Cloud State saw plenty of success on the swim side of things, as the team won five events in the pool in addition to the two on the boards. Andrea Rodriguez (Ankeny, Iowa) won the 100 yard freestyle by nearly six seconds with her time of 10:51.00 and additionally finished second in the 500 yard freestyle race with a time of 5:20.81.
Three Huskies swimmers finished in the top-5 in the 200 yard freestyle, which proved to be one of the most dramatic races of the evening. Christina Ware (Ankeny, Iowa / Centennial) won the race with a time of 1:57.84, while Whitney Hanson (Ladysmith, Wis. / Bruce) came in second at 1:57.90. Ashton Hobza (Albertville, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville) and Mackenzie McGrath (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) additionally competed in the race, finishing fifth and eighth respectively with times of 2:03.00 and 2:07.35.
Kasey Milstroh (Foley, Minn. / Foley) closed her St. Cloud State career with two individual wins, as she swept the 100 and 200 yard butterfly races. Milstroh won the 100 with a time of 58.98 and the 200 with a time of 2:13.24. Additionally, Milstroh was a member of the Huskies 200 freestyle relay team, which won the final meet of the day. The team of Ware, Sarah Moden (Parker, Colo. / Legend), Sydney Gulon (Detroit Lakes, Minn. / Detroit Lakes) and Milstroh edged out the Mavericks top team, winning with a time of 1:39.83.
Thanks to these and several other performances, the Huskies earned 128 points as a team in their dual, though Minnesota State won 172-128. The St. Cloud State divers will return to action on Saturday, January 30 when the Huskies host their annual Diving Invite at the Halenbeck Hall Aquatic Center. The rest of the team will enjoy a few weeks off before competing in the NSIC Championships February 10-13 in Fargo, North Dakota.
