#6 St. Cloud State men's hockey claims 3-1 victory over #4 UMD

The #6 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (7-4-0, 7-4-0 NCHC) completed its weekend series against #4 Minnesota Duluth (6-3-2, 6-3-2 NCHC) with a solid 3-1 win at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Sunday, Jan. 3.
The Huskies notched two unanswered goals in the third period to ice the contest after a strong defensive battle between the two squads in the first half of the game.
At the end of the first period, SCSU and UMD were scoreless before the Huskies' Veeti Miettinen opened the game's scoring at :55 of the second period with a goal that was assisted by linemates Jami Krannila and Zach Okabe.
The Bulldogs knotted the score at 1-1 with a power play goal by Jackson Cates at 6:25 of the third period. I the closing minutes of the third period, Krannila provided SCSU with the game winning goal at 14:38 with his third goal of the season. Miettinen and Ondrej Trejbal each had assists on the play.
Miettinen completed the day's offense at 18:53 of the third period with his team leading seventh goal of the season. Krannila and Okabe each had assists on the play. The two Finnish linemates both finished the day with three points as Miettinen had two goals and one assist, Krannila had one goal and two assists and Okabe had two assists.
On the season, Miettinen took over the team's point scoring lead with 13 points (seven goal and six assists). He currently third in the nation among DI freshman and first among NCHC rookies with 13 points scored this season. He has also scored a goal in SCSU's last five consecutive games.
On the day, SCSU and UMD both had 29 shots on goal. SCSU's David Hrenak charted his fifth win of the season with 28 saves in the game. He now has 54 career wins, which places him second in the SCSU records behind all-time leader Brian Leitza, who had 66 wins from 1994-98.
On the power play, SCSU was 1-of-4 and it was 4-of-5 on the penalty kill vs. UMD.
The victory was also a milestone win for head coach Brett Larson, who collected his 50th career win with the Huskies. In three years at SCSU, Larson owns a 50-25-9 overall record.
The Huskies will return to action on Dec. 8-9 with a weekend series at Minnesota Duluth. Fans can listen to both games on The River 96.7 FM and they can watch the games on NCHC.tv/scsu
