ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Hockey kicks continues their WCHA season with a two-game home-and-home series against new league member St. Thomas this weekend. The Huskies will visit the Tommies at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights on Friday, October 15 with a 3:00 p.m. CST puck drop. On Saturday, October 16 St. Cloud State will celebrate Homecoming by hosting UST at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The finale is set to start at 1:00 p.m. CST with the Huskies Fan Fest to follow on the plaza.
Coverage of Fridays' game will be on the KVSC Sports Stream with Sam Goetzinger and Joey Erickson on the call while Saturday's tilt can be found on 88.1 FM KVSC featuring Blake Thiesen and Jake Bedell. The series will also be streamed on B1G+ for subscribers.
The Huskies were swept last weekend at the hands of No. 1 Wisconsin, falling 6-0 on Saturday and 6-1 on Sunday. Forward Allie Cornelius scored the Huskies' lone goal against the Badgers, while Sanni Ahola established a new career-high with 45 saves on Sunday. Emma Polusny stopped 41 of 44 shots faced in her Saturday start. Taylor Lind is St. Cloud State's point leader with five on a 1-4-5 line, scoring a point in seven of her last eight, while Emma Gentry leads the way with two goals. Senior defender Taytum Geier has notched an assist in three of the Huskies' first four games this season.
St. Cloud State has played St. Thomas just once in the Huskies' 24 years as a collegiate program, shutting out the Tommies 9-0 in the third game of SCSU's inaugural 1998-99 season on November 15, 1998. The dominant win marked the first-ever shutout in Huskies history, with tender Sondra Diaz-Arntzen stopping 11 shots. Natalie Nygren scored three goals for the program's first hat trick while linemates Lisa Olson (1-2-3) and Lindsay Jerke (0-3-3) each tallied three points in the victory. Zero members of the 2021-22 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey team had been born when the two programs last met.
St. Thomas is 1-3-0 in their inaugural season as a Division I program, with their first win of 2021-22 coming against Bemidji State last weekend. The Tommies have gone 11-for-11 on the penalty kill but have scored just three goals on the season. Goaltending duties have been shared by Saskia Maurer (1-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .966 SV) and Alexa Dobchuk (0-3-0, 4.33 GAA, .904 SV), while Abby Promersberger leads in scoring with a 1-1-2 line. Faceoffs have been a weakness for St. Thomas, winning just 36.2% of their draws.
The Huskies will be idle next week before traveling to Columbus for a series at Ohio State over Halloween weekend on October 29-30.
