ST. CLOUD, MINN. - St. Cloud State Men's Basketball Head Coach Matt Reimer announced Friday that the Huskies will retire former standout Dan Hagen's number on Nov. 12. Hagen's No. 54 will be retired in a ceremony prior to the Huskies season opener against Ouachita Baptist, which is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT at Halenbeck Hall.
Hagen will be the first St. Cloud State men's basketball player to have his jersey hung from the rafters, as he will join former men's hockey student-athlete Bret Hedican (No. 24) as the lone Huskies with their jerseys retired.
"As big an impact as Dan had on the St. Cloud State men's basketball program while he played, he has had just as big or a bigger impact after," Reimer commented. "He helps the program in so many ways, and he is so deserving to have his jersey hang in the rafters forever."Â
Hagen played for St. Cloud State and head coach Noel Olson from 1977-1981 and made a lasting impression on the Huskies men's basketball program. Voted team captain in 1980-81, Hagen concluded his career with several school records at the time of his departure, including career points (2136), career points per game (19.78), career field goals (843) and free throws made (450), while ranking second all-time in career rebounds (1004). While his records have since been broken, Hagen still ranks second all-time in career points (2136) and career rebounds (1004) and continues to hold the program record for career free throw attempts with 704.
In addition to retiring Hagen's number, St. Cloud State will recognize the teams that won the North Central Conference titles in 1985-86, 1986-87 and 1987-88 during halftime of Saturday's contest against Harding.
