
Swim and dive maintain pace at NSIC Championships

FARGO, N.D. - The St. Cloud State University swim and dive team maintained its pace on the third day of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Swim and Dive Championship. After gaining ground on Minnesota State University on Thursday, the Huskies strong performances continued, allowing them to stay in second place with 591.5 total team points.
In a day that featured many of the long races, St. Cloud State scored points in all five Friday events, including the 500 yard freestyle race. Christina Ware (Ankeny, Iowa / Centennial) was the highest finisher for the Huskies in the race, as she finished in fourth with a time of 5:09.10. Teammate Rosie Pang (Shah Alam, Malaysia / Sri Kuala Lumpur International School) also scored in the race, finishing in tenth with a time of 5:15.61.
Two St. Cloud State swimmers finished in the top-8 in the 100 yard backstroke, both of whom are seniors. Alexa Monty (New London, Wis. / Appleton North) was the fastest Husky in the pool, as she finished in fifth with a time 58.00. Right on her tale was Marena Kouba (Sartell, Minn. / Sartell), who clocked a time of 58.16 to finish in seventh place. Olivia Travis (Dassel, Minn. / Dassel-Cokato) additionally scored points for St. Cloud State in the race thanks to her time of 58.91 in the "B" final.
The good times continued to roll in 100 yard breaststroke with three top-16 finishes, including two in the top-6. Kara Cowell (Neenah, Wis. / Neenah) and Sarah Moden (Parker, Colo. / Legend) both earned their way into the "A" finals with strong performances in prelims before finishing in sixth and seventh place respectively. Cowell came in sixth behind a time of 1:06.32, while Moden was in seventh thanks to her time of 1:06.62. Whitney Hanson (Ladysmith, Wis. / Bruce) was the final Husky to score in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 13th with a time of 1:07.69.
Kasey Milstroh (Foley, Minn. / Foley) and Kaitlyn Zuehl (Verona, Wis. / Verona) scored in the 200 yard butterfly as they both finished in the top-16. Milstroh just missed All-Conference honors as she came in fourth place behind a time of 2:08.93, while Zuehl finished in 14th with a time of 2:19.57.
St. Cloud State additionally performed well in the final event of the day, the 800 yard freestyle relay. The "A" team of Hanson, Pang, Monty and Ware came in fourth place thanks to their time of 7:45.34. Their teammates, Ashton Hobza (Albertville, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville), Madeline Casey (Superior, Wis. / Superior), Molly Arneson (Springboro, Ohio / Springboro) and Andrea Rodriguez (Ankeny, Iowa) finished in ninth thanks to a time of 8:02.58.
Thanks to these and other strong performances from the previous two days, the Huskies currently sit in second place as a team with 591.5 total team points. Minnesota State currently leads with 706 points.
St. Cloud State will return to the pool Saturday morning on the final day of the NSIC Championship. Prelims are set to begin at 10 a.m. with finals to follow at 5 p.m.
