The St. Cloud State (5-5, 3-2 NSIC) lineup scored 12 runs on 11 hits in the Huskies' 12-2 romp over Wayne State (3-5, 2-3 NSIC) to clinch a Thursday midweek sweep. Eight Huskies had at least one hit in the game and eight different players scored a run.
"A few wins and a series sweep makes a six hour ride back to St. Cloud a lot more enjoyable!," said head coach Pat Dolan, "We played some solid Husky baseball only giving up nine total hits on the day and getting over 20 of our own…and some very big clutch hitting! I'm proud again of the guys competing and hopefully we can get a little winning streak going now."
SCSU opened the scoring in the fourth as John Nett (3-for-4, 2 R, 2B, SF, 2 RBI) doubled down the right field line and was promptly moved to third on a Max Gamm (2-for-4, R, SAC) sacrifice bunt. Paul Steffensen (1-for-4, BB, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) blasted a two-run home run, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Wayne State struck back for two runs in the home half.
The Huskies responded with a monstrous seven-run fifth inning, scoring all seven tallies with two outs. Drew Bulson (1-for-3, R, 2B) rocketed a one-out double, followed by a Tate Wallat (0-for-2, BB, R) walk. After a strikeout, Nett poked a two-run single to left. Gamm doubled down the left field line, moving Nett to third, then Steffensen drew a walk to load the bases. Jake Shusterich (0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI) watched ball four go by to bring in another run and chase Wayne State's starter. Caleb Marquez (1-for-3, BB, 2B, 3 RBI) blasted a bases-clearing three-run double to center and shortly thereafter scored on a Matt Quade (1-for-3, RBI) RBI single.
Up 9-2 heading to the seventh, Shusterich, Marquez and pinch-hitter Tyler Schiller (0-for-0, BB, R) drew walks to load the bases with nobody out. C.J. Breen (1-for-1, RBI) pinch hit and singled home Shusterich, then two batters later Reid Conlee (1-for-1, RBI) legged out a pinch-hit RBI single. Nett rounded out the scoring with a sacrifice fly, plating Schiller.
Huskies ace Matt Osterberg gutted through 4.0 innings of two-hit, two-run, two-walk baseball with one strikeout to earn his first win of 2021. Righthander Tommy Thompson finished off the Wildcats with 3.0 shutout innings of relief, limiting WSC to two hits while punching out four.
SCSU is idle this weekend before wrapping up their conference-opening road stretch with a midweek series at Concordia-St. Paul on Tuesday, March 30. The series is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. CST at Barnes Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.
