A six-run second inning and a brilliant Trevor Koenig start was more than enough to propel St. Cloud State Baseball (9-9, 7-6 NSIC) past Sioux Falls (8-12, 4-12 NSIC) by a 9-1 final in the first game of Sunday's series-concluding doubleheader. The Huskies pounded out 13 hits and worked five walks while limiting USF to a meager five baserunners on the afternoon.
Koenig provided the Huskies with his third straight quality start to begin conference play, dominating USF over 6.0 innings of three-hit, one-run baseball while striking out eight and walking just one. The lefthander worked at a 14.8% swinging strike rate, covering the 6.0 frames on just 81 pitches.
The Huskies opened the home half of the first with a leadoff walk drawn by John Nett (1-for-2, 2 BB, 2 R, SB) followed by Max Gamm (1-for-3, HBP, 2 R, SB) smoking a single into center, putting runners on the corners as Nett went first-to-third. Gamm swiped second base, then Tate Wallat (1-for-2, 2 BB, R, RBI) watched four straight sail outside the strike zone to load the bases. Two batters later, Matt Quade (2-for-3, R, 2B, 3 RBI) tattooed a mammoth two-run double off the left-center wall, giving SCSU a 2-0 lead.
Drew Bulson (1-for-2, BB, R) opened up the Huskies' monster second with a bullet single back up the middle and moved to second on a Parker Savard (2-for-4) tapper to third. Nett lined a one-out single to left-center and promptly stole second, then Gamm was hit by an 0-2 pitch to load the bases for Wallat. SCSU's third baseman, making his first start in the three-hole, drew a seven-pitch walk to plate Bulson. On the very next pitch, Caleb Marquez (1-for-3, R, 3B, 3 RBI) crushed a three-run bases-clearing triple to dead center, chasing Sioux Falls' starter and pushing the lead to 6-0. Quade welcomed the reliever with an RBI single down the leftfield line and later advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. Paul Steffensen (2-for-3, 3B, RBI, SB) wrapped up the scoring by legging out a rocket run-scoring triple to deep right-center, putting the Huskies in front by eight through two.
SCSU tacked on one more in the fourth as Lenny Walker (1-for-3, R, 2 SB) beat out an infield single to third and stole second. Steffensen hit a tough grounder to third that was knocked down, keeping Walker at second but giving the Huskies two aboard with one away. Walker stole third, then a pitch later Steffensen took off for second and drew an errant throw that allowed Walker to cross home.
Mack Larson (1.0 IP, H) finished things out for the Huskies with a scoreless seventh.
