The 2021 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships field has officially been set, with St. Cloud State Baseball (20-12, 18-9 NSIC) earning the No. 3 seed and the right to host their Opening Round series. The Huskies will meet No. 6-seeded U-Mary (21-18, 18-14 NSIC) in a best-of-three series beginning Thursday, May 13 and concluding Friday, May 14. Game times will be announced early this week.
"Just three weeks ago it didn't look too promising and we were batting to finish in the top-eight," remarked head coach Pat Dolan, "But to finish so strong says something about the grit and growth of this team."
St. Cloud State has finished top-three in the NSIC every single season since 2010 and hasn't missed an NSIC Tournament in the last 11 years. The Huskies closed the 2021 regular season by winning 10 of their last 12 with two separate five-game winning streaks.
"The bottom line is everybody's record is 0-0 right now," Dolan continued, "We just need to keep playing baseball like we have the last month."
2021 marks the first season in which the NSIC will utilize a best-of-three series as the Opening Round of the NSIC Baseball Championships. The four series winners will move on to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the double-elimination portion of the Championships beginning Wednesday, May 19 at Karras Park.
The Huskies and Marauders met in what became SCSU's regular season finale on May 5, splitting a midweek with a 7-4 St. Cloud State win and a 6-3 10-inning U-Mary split-salvaging game two. A full Opening Round series preview will be released on Tuesday.
