St. Cloud State Baseball head coach Pat Dolan was inducted into the Dakota State University Athletics Hall of Fame at the University's 25th Annual Hall of Fame Saturday held earlier this month. Dolan spent six seasons at the helm of Dakota State baseball from 2002 to 2007 before joining St. Cloud State ahead of the 2008 season.
"My six years at Dakota State were very memorable," commented Dolan, "I had the opportunity to meet a lot of great people and develop lifelong friendships. We had some unbelievable teams and that sure made coaching fun! We also had a lot of central Minnesota players on our teams that I'm still good friends with today."
Dolan built the Trojan baseball program to one of the perennial powerhouses in the Dakota Athletic Conference and NAIA Region III. He guided his squads to four NAIA Region III tournament appearances in a span of five years. He also helped the Trojans qualify for a pair of NAIA Super Regionals in 2003 and 2005.
Dolan's final season at DSU in 2007 saw a season-opening 22 consecutive winning streak and ranked as high as No. 7 in the NAIA rankings. The Trojans finished that season with a school record 39 victories. He finished his coaching era at DSU with an overall record of 181-111 before taking over the head coaching job at NCAA Division II St. Cloud State (Minn.).
Under Dolan's guidance, 30 athletes were named to DAC All-Conference teams and eight were cited as NAIA All-America Honorable Mention.
The 2003 Super Regional team coached by Dolan was also inducted to the Hall of Fame alongside their head coach. The squad had one of the most historic seasons ever, bringing the first baseball postseason title since winning the former South Dakota Intercollegiate conference championship in 1985.
The Trojans breezed through a tough NAIA Region III tournament with a 4-0 record, advancing to its first ever NAIA Super Regional in school history and vying for a spot to the NAIA World Series. The Trojans fell to Bellevue (Neb.) in the super regional's best-of-three series and finished with a school record 33 victories.
Dakota State nearly shattered every individual and team record during the 2003 season. DSU finished the season with .308 team batting average, a .469 slugging percentage, a .409 on-base percentage, 95 stolen bases, and posted an earned run average of 3.36 as a team. The Trojans smashed 53 home runs, drilled 87 doubles, recorded 488 hits and drove in 307 runs.
Dolan will be entering his 15th season as St. Cloud State's head coach in 2022.
