Hymlárová and Nylund score for St. Cloud State, Lind joins 50-point club
COLUMBUS, Ohio – (RV) St. Cloud State Women's Hockey fell 5-2 to No. 1 Ohio State on Friday evening at the OSU Ice Rink.
Senior captain Taylor Lind scored her 50th collegiate point on the Huskies' second goal of the night, becoming the 28th member of the SCSU 50 Point Club.
The Huskies were outshot 41-15 in their WCHA opener, battling the reigning NCAA Champion on their home ice. Falling behind 2-0 in the second following a scoreless first period, Klára Hymlárová took a beautiful pass from Bailey Burton as SCSU entered the zone and beat the tender to make it a one goal game.
Ohio State added two quick goals early in the third. Midway through the frame, Jenniina Nylund skated ahead through neutral and made a strong move to the left circle, launching a wrister past the Buckeye goalie to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Buckeyes would add an empty-net goal late in the period.
Turning Point
A pair of goals in the first six minutes of the third period turned a 2-1 game into a three-goal lead for Ohio State. The Huskies struggled to generate chances outside of converting on a Jenniina Nylund rush with numbers, allowing an empty-netter late to fall 5-2.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"I was happy for the opportunity to play a talented team like Ohio State. I thought we learned a lot and we were competing in good stretches. Now it's on the staff to teach, to get some film, turn around and try to be a little bit better tomorrow. I definitely thought we took some steps in the process of learning what it looks like to be a competitive team in the WCHA. I'm happy with that."
"First and foremost, we were concerned with our effort. The structure will come, we need some more experience in it. There were definitely some breakdowns which I think we can improve upon. I was encouraged with our effort and our compete level. We'll start with that. There's definitely a process to improving. We have to stick to that, and trust that process."
On the Huskies' response to quick Buckeye goals… "I was happy with the fact that after giving up two quick ones we didn't completely fold and fall back into a mentality of, 'here we go again.' We battled and competed. Coming out of the second 2-1, we felt pretty good about giving ourselves a chance. 4-2 even – having the ability to have pressure and pull the goalie, getting some experience in giving ourselves a chance to win a hockey game. Learning new expectations, learning what it looks like to compete."
