Gentry and Nylund both score on the power play as St. Cloud State falls to 0-2 in WCHA play
COLUMBUS, Ohio – (RV) St. Cloud State Women's Hockey scored a pair of power play goals but couldn't slow down No. 1 Ohio State in a 6-2 loss on Saturday afternoon in Columbus.
Emma Gentry scored the first of two Huskies power play goals just three minutes into the second, jumping on a rebound off a Grace Wolfe shot and throwing it past the goaltender's right shoulder. Ohio State scored the next four goals of the game to swing momentum their way.
Jenniina Nylund scored her third goal of the season with a power play strike as the Huskies went on a 4-on-3 advantage late in the third, redirecting a Taylor Lind try around the tender.
Both teams displayed strong power play units as the Huskies were 2-for-2 and Ohio State was 2-of-3.
Turning Point
After Gentry's goal made it 2-1 three minutes into the second period, the Buckeyes scored three times in the frame to put the game out of reach.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
On the strong first period… "I thought our first period was perhaps our best of the weekend. It was even, shots were close, we had a lot more zone time and sustained possession. Unfortunately they buried two of their opportunities, getting out to a lead and taking control of the game. I think we did a much better job coming out of our own zone. Managing pucks, managing risk much better; and that creates more zone time and better opportunities offensively."
On the productive Huskies power play through four games… "There's been an emphasis on knowing that if we're going to want to give ourselves a chance, our power play has to perform. We've been able to capitalize and execute some situations – hopefully that continues moving forward."
On the struggles to generate chances in the second and third… "Territorial. The long change in the second period is always pretty pivotal, that's when they capitalized on a couple more chances and really took a hold on the game. In the third period we completely ran out of gas. A heavy weekend for us, not only physically with the grit and compete level of Ohio State, but also with our conditioning and our legs."
Biggest takeaways from the first weekend of WCHA play… "Just the need for us to tactically be better with our structure and understand risk, work ethic and compete level. I thought it was a good weekend for us learning-wise – what it looks like, some of the habits Ohio State has. Some of the things they do systematically that they do are things we have talked about, they just execute at a much higher pace with more depth."
